Summer visit at Ode, besides the signature dishes, there was a wonderful shrimp dish in garlic, which we completely soak up with the home made bread they gave us.

Always good to go back to Ode (7th visit). Namai san is so humble and makes you always feel very welcome.

Always good to go back to Ode (7th visit). Namai san is so humble and makes you always feel very welcome.
His dishes evolve with the season, even his signature dish “Grey 2021” is tasting differently every time you go there. Star of evening was the Guinea fowl which was succulent and very tasty. The Baigai (sea snail) with Okura and cucumber sauce, another outstanding dish. The difference in texture between the snail and the okura was super interesting.

The food is simple, but very tasty and there are mountains of it. The wine list is small but priced very kindly.

Interesting cheese shop plus pizzeria. Great deal for lunch, a set for 2 people for ¥5,000. A big salad, a pizza and a cheese curry. All very tasty.
The pizza dough is more Roman style than Napolitan, thin and crispy. The curry with loads of cheese in it is comfort food as its best.

Another jewel in the crown of the Ishikawa group. Nanpeidai chef's table featuring Kakuland, short NK. A young team, which sometimes seems to be a little disorganized, but churns out great food. Breaking consciencelessly the rule book in taking old dishes and reinterpreting them by adding unusual ingredients. Some of it creates very tasty dishes, like the combination of Junsai and caviar. Or the unavoidable summer fish Ayu, mixed into the rice dish (after being deboned) which is more like a risotto than the usual Japanese rice. Genius.
I remain astonished by the ability of Ishikawa san to find and nurture talent. Less

Visit of the Karuizawa branch. Fantastic lunch with some of the special dishes only available in this restaurant.
The grilled vegetables are a must and so is the penne made out of pizza dough. I love the feature to order a half and half pizza with two different toppings on one pizza.

Chinese restaurant in the famous Mampei Hotel, one of the classic hotels in Japan. Food was average with nothing outstanding.
However it was worth the visit to soak in the atmosphere of a truly historic place and have an authentic drink at the bar.
