Some dishes from my 2 nights stay at Yamagata the Takinami, 1st night in private room, 2nd night at counter. Very good quality food especially for an onsen ryokan. The counter dining experience almost at the same level of some TL4.0 restaurants in Tokyo. •

Pros: easy access from Tokyo; newly renovated traditional house; private outdoor onsen in beautiful garden; great dinner service either at the counter or in private room
Cons: rooms are on smaller side, only outdoor shower available which may not be very pleasant in winter; limited wine selection
