This very casual izakaya has an astronomical tabelog rating. And trust me, for a good reason. Ogawa-san and his team produce very competently fantastic and varied food. Go there and try to eat as much as possible of the daily menu which they draw up on the back board.
You will thank me!

Wonderful one man izakaya in the souther suburbs of Kyoto. The restaurant specialises on soft shell turtle which in the winter time are framed but from June on are wild specimen.
Beautiful plating and very flavourful dishes.

Back at the best Edomae sushi in Fukuoka. I love the style of Setsuo Funahashi. I also love his humble, gentle personality. He welcomes each guest with his warm personality. And he is a really good sushi chef.
His shari uses one special rice vinegar and he sources most of his neta locally.
A great place for a sushi meal for lunch or dinner.

Wonderful local place, for lunch there is a long line, for dinner there is a 2 year wait.
The food is simple, well sourced and cooked.
And then you pay ¥860 for lunch (and ¥5,000 for a 10 course dinner).
Only in Japan!

Back at the Twins. Their food is causal yet refined and inspiring. I always go there after dinner for a drink but I should go there for a proper dinner

This must be one of the most beautiful ryokans in all of Japan. Set below an impressive rock face in the middle of a huge garden with hundreds of blooming azaleas, the rooms are very private and have all their private onsen. Even though the ryokan was fairly full, in three days I have not encountered any other guest.

The food is changing every night and is impressively good. Certainly not a top Kaiseki meal but good enough to enjoy it three nights in a row. The breakfast however is certainly world class.
It features arguably the best outdoor bar ever! The bar has six tables overlooking the pond which is lit at night. The bar keeper has an impressive list of liquors but his speciality is gin. He serves it straight up but dilutes each gin to a certain alcohol level to bring out the best of the spice mixture. My favourite was the Monkey 47 diluted down to 19%. Unbelievable, only a Japanese mind can come up with something like this.
Highly recommended for a relaxing time. Less

Another visit to this casual fine dining Kaiseki restaurant. New dishes, new flavour, same great execution and hospitality.
