Continuing with my Top 40 (Top 80 available on my FB page link in bio) dishes of 2019 I wanted to give the top 10 a bit more of a spotlight as I think that these are all restaurants that deserve your attention. Some are already world famous and some lesser known, but without exception all are worth your time travelling to.

At No 10 @lukejfrench and the team @restaurant_joro in Sheffield are doing some wonderful things and this dish of Celeriac with cep & Lincolnshire poacher really stood out for me. Get up to Sheffield, you won’t regret it 👍🏻

While walking the Camino del Norte over Christmas and New Year I was incredibly lucky to have a few Spanish friends following my progress. They would regularly message me to say that I would be arriving in a particular town or village in a couple of days and recommending/insisting that I eat at a particular restaurant. Even booking them for me on occasion. The Michelin guide, World’s 50 Best and OAD are all great resources (among many others) for hunting down great restaurants, but you can’t beat local knowledge. And that is why I ended up at ⭐️ Real Balneario, a beautiful restaurant on the beach in Salinas. As with most of the restaurants I visited in Asturias along the coast the emphasis was on seafood and traditional preparations. Cocochas of course with pilpil sauce, hake, local anchovies and goose barnacles were the highlights here. I went for dinner but I would recommend going for lunch to fully appreciate the view of the sea, which comes right up to your table if you are there at high tide. Less

- Neil A. Chef added a new meal Dinner at Scott's at Scott's
Scott's is proof that a restaurant can have a long, proud history and still be fashionable, glamorous and relevant. It has a terrific clubby atmosphere and if you’re in a two then the counter is a great spot. The choice of prime quality fish and shellfish is impressive.

Ray fish with capers & to finish, an incredible dessert of fried veal brain. Yes! Veal brain! 🧠 Delicious!
One of the absolute highlights of my food tour in October was a lunch at Sacha in Madrid. An unassuming bistro in the Chamartin neighbourhood founded in 1972. Charismatic chef Sacha Hormaechea took over the reigns from his parents Carlos and Pitila and cooks uncomplicated traditional dishes with Catalan and Galician influences.
I have had many a 30 course tasting menu but I have to say that a lot of those pale into insignificance when comparing the food based simply on flavour.
Dishes such as the false sea urchin lasagne or the Suquet de Carabinero, prepared in front of you and then eaten using the head shell as a spoon, were an absolute revelation. But the dish that I remember most clearly, and that instantly went into my top 10 of the year, was a dessert that Sacha himself brought to the table. Placing it in front of us with a mischievous glint in his eye he refused to tell us what we were about to eat but urged us to tuck in quickly. The innocuous looking disks of golden brown sugaryness were in fact slices of veal brain and were without a doubt one of the most incredible desserts I have ever had. Anyway....go and eat there. .

- Neil A. Chef added a new meal Dinner at Taberna Laredo at Taberna Laredo
Another recommendation of mine while in Madrid is @taberna_laredo Taberna Laredo where you can enjoy a great casual meal of excellent quality ingredients simply but expertly prepared. We enjoyed mushrooms with egg, red prawns, artichoke omelette, tuna salad, rabbit cutlets and a local take on gazpacho. All delicious 😋 .

How do you follow an incredible meal at ⭐️⭐️⭐️ @dabizdiverxo DiverXO in Madrid? You go to @streetxomadrid of course. What would we like to eat we were asked. “Give us all of the food please” was the standard reply. And so they did. As expected, punchy flavourful street food style dishes followed and our hands got very messy. Another level from StreetXO London (which I really enjoyed) this is a raucous affair, and any place that serves me a cocktail the size of my head gets a big thumbs up from me. A must visit restaurant while in Madrid. Thanks to @manudiverxo and the team for making it such a great experience @streetxo_madrid .

Another visit to @ernst.berlin
I have a lot of time for @dylan1watson and the team at Ernst with their intense focus on what is the very best, in-season product at that moment. Finding it through actually visiting the forests, fields and farmers themselves maybe the morning before your meal. Seeing the potential in a humble ingredient like a simple salad leaf that is tentatively pushing it’s way out of the Earth, and pouncing on that product and transforming it into something wondrous to eat, without the aid of luxurious ingredients like truffles, caviar and uni. Seeing the potential in the very last raspberries of the season, the ones that even the farmer refuses to waste his time picking so they just pick’em themselves.
Taking just simple plates of food where using superb knowledge and technique, that one salad leaf, mushroom, piece of fish or cut of meat is able to shine brightly.
With the menu evolving and changing day after day and even during services on the fly, it’s great to know that you could visit Ernst one week later and most likely get 40 dishes all of which are different from your previous visit. According to Dylan and the team, the number of dishes that are in their repertoire since opening relatively recently is now in the thousands. You really get a sense of energy and fun when seated in front of this team. They are all extremely focused and clearly love what they are doing and this transfers on to the plate. Don’t be fooled by the simple presentations either, there is extraordinary depth of flavour in these dishes, a true skill. .
