While it is tempting on a short trip to visit all your favourite spots, I have been trying to look for interesting restaurants that I have not yet visited. @restaurangcococarmen Coco & Carmen, happily was one of those places. From the group behind Punk Royale, this is the more well behaved sister to the black sheep of the family (in a good way) in Punk Royale. I really enjoyed this meal and will be heading back for sure next time I’m in Stockholm. As with Frantzén, my lunch started off with a big dollop of caviar and a generous shot of vodka. The perfect introduction to any meal in my opinion.

I revisit La Tasquita de Enfrente in Madrid a few weeks ago. I’m glad to say that it is still the small local place that serves food using ‘100% Spanish produce to create a menu that not only looks forward to the future but has great respect for the traditions of the past’.

A culinary journey through 4 spaces, starting with snacks at the cocktail bar then through to the “bottle coliseum” where over 3000 varieties of wine are on display. One of the absolute highlights of my food tour was a lunch at Sacha in Madrid. An unassuming bistro in the Chamartin neighbourhood founded in 1972. Charismatic chef Sacha Hormaechea took over the reigns from his parents Carlos and Pitila and cooks uncomplicated traditional dishes with Catalan and Galician influences.
I have had many a 30 course tasting menu but I have to say that a lot of those pale into insignificance when comparing the food based simply on flavour.
Dishes such as the false sea urchin lasagne or the Suquet de Carabinero, prepared in front of you (see video) and then eaten using the head shell as a spoon, were an absolute revelation. But the dish that I remember most clearly, and that instantly went into my top 10 of the year, was a dessert that Sacha himself brought to the table. Placing it in front of us with a mischievous glint in his eye he refused to tell us what we were about to eat but urged us to tuck in quickly. The innocuous looking disks of golden brown sugaryness were in fact slices of veal brain and were without a doubt one of the most incredible desserts I have ever had. Anyway....go and eat there. I get asked a lot about where to eat in Bangkok and you might be surprised that at the top of my recommendation list of places to eat in Thailand’s capital is a modern German restaurant. But @restaurant_suhring is my No 1 recommendation. I’ve been eating @thomas_suhring and @mathias_suhring ‘s food since they were cooking at Mezzaluna and was thrilled when they finally got their own place. With their unique take on the food they grew up eating and the meticulous, friendly & relaxed service of @mathieu.campion & team it is really of no surprise to me that they have quickly earned two Michelin stars. A third will surely come.
Continuing with my Top 40 (Top 80 available on my FB page link in bio) dishes of 2019 I wanted to give the top 10 a bit more of a spotlight as I think that these are all restaurants that deserve your attention. Some are already world famous and some lesser known, but without exception all are worth your time travelling to.

A firm favourite of mine when in Barcelona. Or Spain for that matter, I flew from Bilbao and back last month just to eat their food again. It was all about the superbly prepared seafood and traditional regional Asturian dishes back in January when I visited another gem on the Camino del Norte. ⭐️ Casa Gerardo, in Prendes, is 135 years old and the Moran father and son team cooking there now are the fourth and fifth generation of cooks to do so. There is a perfect symbiosis between the traditional and the avant-garde here. Traditional dishes like fabada de Prendes (Asturian bean stew), hake with pilpil sauce and creamy rice pudding sit alongside more contemporary preparations. Dishes of Elvers and cocochas capture the season perfectly. I can’t wait to go back there and would highly recommend you to give it a try once they hopefully reopen. Less
