While walking the Camino del Norte over Christmas and New Year I was incredibly lucky to have a few Spanish friends following my progress. They would regularly message me to say that I would be arriving in a particular town or village in a couple of days and recommending/insisting that I eat at a particular restaurant. Even booking them for me on occasion. The @michelinguide , @theworlds50best and @oadtop100 are all great resources (among many others) for hunting down great restaurants, but you can’t beat local knowledge. And that is why I ended up at ⭐️ @realbalneario Real Balneario, a beautiful restaurant on the beach in Salinas. As with most of the restaurants I visited in Asturias along the coast the emphasis was on seafood and traditional preparations. Cocochas of course with pilpil sauce, hake, local anchovies and goose barnacles were the highlights here. I went for dinner but I would recommend going for lunch to fully appreciate the view of the sea, which comes right up to your table if you are there at high tide. .

Lunch at @claudebosi1 Oyster Bar. While briefly back in the UK to get my first vaccination jab in May, I tried of course to cram in as much food as possible during my 48 hours in that London.
I happily managed to get a seat outside the Bibendum building to enjoy the amazing crab quiche that me and Michael Price enjoyed so much many months ago. With a flight departing from Gatwick at 3.50pm I had emailed ahead to say that I would only want a couple of dishes and needed to be away by 1pm at the latest. This request was duly ignored as the kitchen very generously sent out the unordered octopus dish as a ‘must try’ speciality of the house. The wine flowed, the sun shone, more dishes were ordered and a flight was missed. I’m ok with that. That quiche is incredible.

Another visit a few weeks ago to @edoardopellicano ‘s communal table restaurant @maos.bluemountainschool Mãos in Shoreditch, London. Described as a ‘kitchen, table and wine room’, they serve a 17 course tasting menu to the 16 guests sat at the communal table. The meal starts off in the kitchen where drinks and snacks are served before moving through to the dining room which has an adjoining wine room. Before the meal started we were told that the majority of the courses could be eaten anywhere we liked, meaning that we were encouraged to get up and wander around if we wanted. We could go and chat about the wine in the wine room or, as I did, enjoy several courses standing in the kitchen and chatting to the chefs. This made for a very relaxed and fun evening.
The cooking here is exceptional and it is well worth a visit. I wish the team my best wishes and hope that they are keeping safe and will be up and running again soon

A pretty nice meal really, in a fantastic dining room where, in this converted industrial warehouse, the kitchen takes centre stage being surrounded on all sides by tables. I remember enjoying Dos Cielos years ago where the Torres brothers used to cook. Now on this much bigger stage they can really show off their style of cuisine which is based on cooking ‘through memories’ with dishes based on family recipes using seasonal, garden-fresh ingredients and contemporary techniques. With Joan Roca on the table to my right and probably Spain’s most respected restaurant critic Jose Carlos Capel on the table to my left, it was no surprise that the service was impeccable. Worth a look when in Barcelona

Thinking back to happier times. Lunch a while ago at @bocca_di_lupo in London. This is my kind of place, a bustling counter where the food is honest and most importantly tasty. Since 2008 Bocca Di Lupo has been turning out regional Italian cuisine and is a humble trattoria at it’s heart. With an emphasis on top quality seasonal produce everything here is made in-house from the bread, gelati, sausages, salami, pickles, mostarda and of course the pasta. My recommendation is to do as I did and grab a seat at the end of the counter by the pass and just check out what’s coming out and if it looks tasty (which all of it does) then simply point and order. Who needs a menu 🤷🏼♂️

I managed to squeeze 3 restaurants, 1 PCR test and a vaccination into the one full day I had in London back in May. A spur of the moment walk-in at @_littlesocial Little Social who have pretty much taken over Pollen Street. Jason Atherton was there schmoozing the tables and told me they expected to do 200 covers that day. With Pollen Street Social closed, all the staff were focusing on banging out big covers from it’s little sister across the street. Blessed with a bit of sunshine it was encouraging to see a busy restaurant finally operational. The food was great to. Of course both @pollen_street_social and Little Social are back open now and I’d encourage you to visit both.

Some very tasty little snow-persons(🤷🏼♂️) Dinner last week at ⭐️⭐️ @spectrum_amsterdam Several people recommended that I eat here, sighting it as THE restaurant to visit whilst in the city, and I am grateful that they did. It’s exciting when you visit restaurants that are clearly pushing for that next accolade, wether that is a new young-gun shooting for her/his first Michelin star or an established two star that is reaching for the pinnacle. Spectrum feels like the latter. Maybe the chefs will say that they don’t care about such things but it certainly has an air of confidence and boldness that suggests otherwise. I say confidence because not all the dishes are pretty to look at, but they deliver on flavour. Meaning that the kitchen has made a conscious decision that any further prodding of tweezers will compromise the dish.
There are two menus here, one being a vegetarian menu. I was advised by more than one person to order the vegetarian menu as the cooking is apparently incredible. Not being psychotic, I decided to order the regular menu containing delicious meat and seafood but to ask them very nicely to add a couple of dishes from the vegetarian menu as well. They were more than happy to oblige. I recommend you do the same, it’s certainly not too much food.
There were certainly echoes of the excellent restaurant De Librije in Zwolle, where chef @sidney_schutte and restaurant manager @saschaspeckemeier worked together over a decade ago.
Overall it was a great meal and I look forward to them being awarded a third ⭐️. It’s only a matter of time.
