An incredible lunch at ⭐️⭐️ @therabyhunt up near Darlington. This really was one of the best meals I can remember having over the past 18 months. With incredible small bites at the start of the meal all amazingly being perfect in my opinion, I was sure there was no way that this level could be kept up throughout the meal but it was. Every dish was flawless. Dishes inspired by chef patron James Close’s travels. An idea is born and over time him and his team hone and craft that idea, focusing and focusing down until they achieve the perfect nigiri or crab tart or tempura langoustine. Just outstanding stuff. My only small gripe was no cheese course but as pastry chef and partner Maria Close @theguseva explained, James keeps adding dishes to the menu and some guests were being unable to finish the incredible desserts so
they were afraid that adding a cheese trolley would just compound the problem. I disagree as I had no problem cleaning every plate so I think some cheese or even a composed cheese course would be a great addition to what I honestly thought was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ meal. You might think it's a mission to get up to the restaurant but it really isn't. 2.5 hours on the train from London and a short taxi ride and you're there. We were lucky to dine on a Friday lunch when the main restaurant is closed and the team just focus on the guests at the kitchen counter. Just three of us this time so we felt very well looked after. Highly recommended and I cannot wait to get back up there soon.

Definitely worth checking out and I’d be interested to see how this restaurant progresses. The cocktail pairing was also very interesting and indeed tasty.

I have to say that in my opinion, and this is very much just my opinion, I think that the popularity garnered since being awarded the W50B top spot has damaged the diner’s experience. They seem to be really packing the customers in. I have never seen it as busy as I did this past visit. I know of course that if you have a never ending queue of customers then it makes sense to capitalise on that and increase covers and put your prices up. But for me, the experience was noticeably worse off and I left a little disappointed. There is a full review on my FB if you are interested in a more detailed description.

After the Faroe Islands I was heading for World’s 50 Best Restaurants Number 1 Mirazur in France but with a quick one night stop over in London so I got to pay another visit to one of my favourite spots in London, @maos.bms
I was interested to see how chef Eduardo @edoardopellicano had dealt with the restrictions put in place due to Covid as this was formerly a single communal table where the guests were encouraged to interact with each other and also where one could wander around into the kitchen and chat to the chefs, even eat courses in the kitchen, or into the wine room. Quite the opposite now applies of course with the room divided into several tables observing social distancing. In an effort to maintain that interaction with the kitchen they have built a small counter on one side of the room where Eduardo finishes a lot of the dishes over a Japanese style grill. So it’s a shame to lose what I felt, having visited several times, was a great concept in the communal table and the general vibe of being at someone’s house at a dinner party rather than at just another restaurant.
However, the food still stands out and it’s clear to me that Eduardo and his team are very much included in the group of kitchens and chefs that have been using their time during lockdown wisely and to great effect to develop and hone their menus. The result is a menu of 12 or so dishes that I will be rushing back for.
Highly recommended

It may not look like much but this bisque made with local shellfish was mind blowing. Reminiscent of the amazing bisque at @restaurantwillemhiele , which I still rate as the best I’ve ever had.
Then followed by a lovely cheese plate and some local rhubarb with cream to round off a really great meal

The next stop on this month long trip was to fly from Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands. Of course I was there for another visit to ⭐️⭐️ Koks but first I went to try the famous Faroese lamb.
This was after quarantining myself in the hotel while awaiting the results of my latest Covid test. Everyone who arrives is tested at the airport and then given the all clear (or not) via text a few hours later. Where else better to try this lamb than at The Lamb House. Áarstova is in Tórshavn, where I was staying, and is a traditional grass roofed house on the cobbled main street. They do a short taster menu where you can try some of the local specialities along with a main course of slow cooked Faroese lamb shoulder. The service is friendly and there is a very homely vibe to the place. A very good start to my short stay on the islands. If you do go, then bring a friend as the leg of lamb is quite an undertaking as a single diner. I did not disgrace myself though and put a sizeable dent in it.

One of the highlights of my recent restaurant tour was another visit to the Faroe Islands and to ⭐️⭐️ restaurant Koks @koks_restaurant But one of the highlights of any of the travelling and eating that I’ve done was when chef Poul Andrias Ziska of Koks @poulandrias picked me up from my hotel and drove me to the spot where the local fishermen and harvesters of seafood drop off their catches and where the chefs at Koks drive by every morning to collect these treasures to take to the restaurant.
Before I knew it, I was standing on a short wooden pier surrounded by incredible scenery watching Poul pulling crates of live shellfish out of the water and selecting a couple of each specimen to enjoy with some shots of warming aquavit. I’ve been to hundreds of Michelin star restaurants in recent years and even the most intricate and luxurious three star meal doesn’t come close to standing in the cold drizzle watching Poul dispatching fresh shellfish with a simple pocket knife and handing over some of the best seafood in the world to pop into my mouth. Horse mussels, langoustine, Queen scallops, razor clams and mahogany clams decades old all washed down with aquavit and conversation. Unbeatable. And the following meal at Koks wasn’t bad either. Actually better than my previous visit I felt. There are exciting times ahead for Koks with new investment found they will hopefully be moving to a brand new premises in the coming years. From what Poul was saying, the plans are very ambitious indeed. Something to keep a close eye on.
