This years best dishes list has been a tough one to compile and with so many restaurants visited I have found it impossible to cull down to less than 70 dishes that really stood out for me this year.
2018 has been a busy year. 27 countries visited, one of which I managed to walk across when completing the Camino De Santiago earlier in the year. With the benefit of hindsight I kind of wish I was starting that walk tomorrow in order to try and take off the pounds that I have piled on this year having had 217 destination meals in total, including 73 Michelin one stars, 43 two stars and 20 three stars as well as all the other new or more casual places or restaurants that are in regions or countries not yet included in the Michelin guide (these figures include restaurants that I visited more than once). While I have attempted to put the dishes in an order of preference, please don’t read too much into that. There is very little difference in terms of amazingness between #1 and #71.
Please feel free to leave any comments you may have or mistakes that you spot🙏🏻 As I have said before, its more about the people I meet along the way and the new friends I have made. So with that in mind I wish you all a happy new year and here are my best 71 dishes of 2018.

Lunch at @bisavistavern in Barcelona. Your exuberant host and chef is Eduard Ros. Until only a few years ago he was a practicing lawyer with a passionate hobby for interesting wines and cooking. He then decided to quit his day job and open up Bisavis where he serves just a maximum of 12 counter seats single handedly. An incredibly good value and competently cooked tasting menu of produce driven dishes is accompanied by some fantastic and sometimes extremely hard to find wines from Eduard’s collection. I really enjoyed our lunch there and it was very telling that of the 8 people eating that day, 4 of us were chefs. If you can bag a seat there then you are in for a treat.

Even though I was feeling a little under the weather the day I ate there, I could still recognise some of the brilliance in @tonetromero ‘s cooking. Thanks to some guy called Kristian for introducing me to this hidden gem 🙏🏻
“Despite its brilliant trajectory since it opened in 2012, Suculent remains a well-kept secret of Barcelona; one of those restaurant where other chefs go to feast on their days off. Without pretensions or luxuries, chef Toni Romero has spent years renewing and giving his own twist to traditional Mediterranean dishes, with hints and influences from other cultures.
Here the focus is not necessarily on technique – which is something that Romero knows quite well having spent years cooking at elBulli with the Adrià-brothers, Arzak and Akelarre – as it is on the flavor. Broths and sauces are where the real DNA of Suculent can be found and almost every dish is created with that in mind. The emotional energy of Barcelona is concentrated, reduced and turned into intense bases that cover every single vegetable, piece of fish or meat.”

A strong start to my New Years resolutions with a 10 mile hike up to the top of the Tünektepe Teleferic and back down again in Antalya, Turkey on Saturday followed by an 8 mile walk around the bay this evening finishing at the pub for a well earned beer.
My new job will be based here in Antalya for the next three months at least while they finish building the yacht in the ship yard here so I’m very happy to find such incredible scenery and hiking opportunities right on our doorstep.
My shirts should fit again in no time😬
