Located in a restored mansion in Bangkok, Sorn offers an immersive 10-course tasting menu that unfolds the stories and traditions of the region. Chef Ice is particularly proud of their rice salad dish, "The Sea Holds the Forest," which encapsulates the intricate blend of flavors and the area's symbiotic relationship between sea and land.
Sorn's culinary journey, curated by Chef Supaksorn "Ice" Jongsiri, took diners on an exceptional exploration of Southern Thai cuisine yesterday, blending rich regional flavors with contemporary elegance. The experience began with an amuse-bouche that set the tone for the night. This prelude led into the "Silver Sillogo," a combination of turmeric, scallops, and curry paste, capturing the fiery essence of the region.
A standout course, "The Ocean Jarnt," presented Phuket lobster, spotted Babylon, and blue crab in a way that highlighted the ocean's bounties. The "Sorbet," made with radish and young ginger, refreshed the palate before the "Crab Stick," a symphony of blue and mud crab roe with chili paste and soy sauce.
"MalinJo" and "Gor Lae" followed, with the former offering coconut milk and dried shrimp, and the latter cockle and dried abalone, both skillfully celebrating Southern Thai flavors.
"The Sea Holds the Forest" summed up Chef Ice's philosophy perfectly, combining turmeric rice with a herbal Budu sauce, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between the sea and land.
Accompaniments like "Son Hoak Chili Paste" and "Dried Yellow Curry" enhanced the main course of jasmine rice steamed with charcoal and Ranong mineral water.
To end, "Sago" featured longan sorbet and jelly with coconut ice powder, while "Bee Koh Moy" delighted with black sticky rice, young coconut ice cream, and cashews.

The highlight of the latter half of our meal at “Sorn” was the off-menu special, the “Blue Crab Curry”👑 Not a single part of the blue crab is wasted, as it is used to create an umami-rich broth that is steamed in a claypot with rice, crab meat, crab roe and fresh coconut milk💯 It is served with a delicious crab curry simmered in homemade curry paste and coconut milk🤤

バンコクの名店「Sorn」の後半で最も印象に残ったのが、裏メニューの「Blue Crab Curry(アオガニのカレー)」👏 土鍋ご飯はアオガニの、身、卵、甲羅の出汁、そしてフレッシュなココナッツミルクで炊いた絶品🍚 カレーは出来立ての自家製カレーペーストとココナッツミルクと煮た、旨味の詰まった仕上がり🥥 終始感動の連続で、機会があれば定期的に伺いたいと思います🥹

Our second visit to “Sorn” was as mind-blowing as our first🥲 The cover photo was their signature, “The Sea Holds the Forest” served with southern herbs, turmeric rice, and fish innards dressing💐 Other classic highlights include the “Gems on Crab Stick” (live blue crab with mud crab roe and yellow chilli paste) and the sweet “Coconut” with southern plants, dried squid and shrimp💓

念願が叶い、再訪できたバンコクの名店「Sorn」💓 お料理の拘りはもちろんのこと、プレゼンテーションやサービスも素晴らしく、終始感動の連続でした🥹 カバー写真はコースの中でも特に印象に残った「ハーブサラダ」🥗 タイ南部地方を代表するハーブ、ターメリックライス、発酵アンチョビーのソースなどを混ぜた、様々なフレーバーと食感を合わせた逸品でした💯

Though not for the faint of heart as this is some of the spiciest Thai food you can get. However, they are happy to dial down the heat if you let them know. Also the menu is very well balanced with any of the particularly fiery dishes usually followed by a dish that is designed to cool you down and bring some welcome relief. I did try to make a good showing of myself in front of Harley but inevitably ended up sobbing like a small child during a couple of the courses 🔥 🥵. I don’t think she noticed 🤷🏼♂️🙄

Continued our meal at @sornfinesouthern with the main course where we got to try two excellent curries - the southern green curry with charcoal grilled chicken wings and the special crab curry with blue crab meat which came with a crab steamed rice! Continued our meal at @sornfinesouthern with the main course where we got to try two excellent curries - the southern green curry with charcoal grilled chicken wings and the special crab curry with blue crab meat which came with a crab steamed rice! An impressive array of condiments (chili paste, dried stingray, etc.) and vegetables (mango ginger, red corn, etc.) were served to accompany the rice and curries.
For desserts, we had the refreshing sago boiled in coconut water with longan, and the seasonal “canned” fruit which is currently custard apple (or 番鬼荔枝 as we call it in HK). The grand finale was the trolley of street food inspired petit fours served with southern style tea and coffee!

Ecstatic to be back at @sornfinesouthern - probably the most difficult restaurant to book in Bangkok! Serving fiery innovative southern Thai cuisine by @ice_supaksorn, it’s one of my favorite restaurants in Bangkok. Ecstatic to be back at @sornfinesouthern - probably the most difficult restaurant to book in Bangkok! Serving fiery innovative southern Thai cuisine by @ice_supaksorn, it’s one of my favorite restaurants in Bangkok. While southern Thai food is known to be spicy, not every dish was spicy here and we experienced a wide range of flavors from dish to dish. Our meal started with a series of small bites from the sea - the highlights of which were the Phuket lobster and the signature Gems on Crab Stick with live blue crab, mud crab roe, and yellow chili paste. The spiciness in our mouths was then magically washed away by the soothing Coconut soup with dried squid and shrimp. Then came another signature - the beautiful Khao Yum with 10 different southern vegetables and herbs mixed with a fermented budu sauce. The tasty southern Beef Curry with roti concluded the first part of our meal before the main course which was to be shared family style.

Desserts at Sorn delivered the same kind of sensation from the climax of the rice and large ranges of dishes in the previous course. In fact they became a whole range of highlights of the meal.
The combination of sago and coconut is very common but the way they calibrated the flavor with the longan ice and jam was so elegant and refreshing, it brought out the other side of Thai fruit flavors which are often perceived as very bright and strong. This was the other side of the spectrum and super super delicious.
The canned fruit is a whimsical touch on a very meaning intention on seasonal fresh fruit (see pic 8). This time we had yellow watermelon, while the visits before I he red watermelon and Thai orange as well. A small bite to taste good fruit from local farmers

First visit. Decided to "man up" and take dishes at their "regular" level of spiciness. Big mistake. My tongue was on fire even before finishing starters. I almost cried from the pain. I understand spiciness adds a different dimension but from my perspective, beyond a certain level is just too much.

This years best dishes list has been a tough one to compile and with so many restaurants visited I have found it impossible to cull down to less than 70 dishes that really stood out for me this year.
2018 has been a busy year. 27 countries visited, one of which I managed to walk across when completing the Camino De Santiago earlier in the year. With the benefit of hindsight I kind of wish I was starting that walk tomorrow in order to try and take off the pounds that I have piled on this year having had 217 destination meals in total, including 73 Michelin one stars, 43 two stars and 20 three stars as well as all the other new or more casual places or restaurants that are in regions or countries not yet included in the Michelin guide (these figures include restaurants that I visited more than once). While I have attempted to put the dishes in an order of preference, please don’t read too much into that. There is very little difference in terms of amazingness between #1 and #71.
Please feel free to leave any comments you may have or mistakes that you spot🙏🏻 As I have said before, its more about the people I meet along the way and the new friends I have made. So with that in mind I wish you all a happy new year and here are my best 71 dishes of 2018.
