- Neil A. Chef added a new meal Dinner at Tenzushi at Ten Zushi Kyo Cho Ten (天寿し)
The style of sushi at Tenzushi is Kyushu. Benefitting from it’s location between three seas, Amano San uses citrus and salt to compliment the extremely fresh seafood rather than ageing the fish and servings with a soy reduction in the Edomae style.

When I visited in November we were extremely lucky to be treated to a private sitting at the 5 seat counter of this renowned establishment. Apart from the delicious sushi, the thing I really remember is Amano-San’s warmth and generosity with his precious time. 🇯🇵 .

On Monday Michelin will announce it’s guide for the Nordic countries. This will be the first time that the new Noma will be eligible for any Michelin awards. What are your predictions? Will they get the elusive 3⭐️s that were previously never achieved? Personally, having visited twice last year, I think @reneredzepinoma and his team deserve and will get 3⭐️s. But what are your thoughts? It has been suggested that the reason Noma in it’s previous incarnation never got 3⭐️s was that the Michelin inspectors perceived a lack of value (luxury in another word). But this has been addressed and then some at Noma 2.0 so in theory 3⭐️s should be achieved this time around. Fingers crossed 🤞 as it would be well deserved IMHO. .

The name 7 Mehmet comes from the chef Mehmet Akdag who was born here in Antalya, and has been working in kitchens here since he was very young when other children of his age were still at school learning to write on blackboards.
The story goes that while working for a very well regarded chef whom Mehmet looked up to very much, a hair was found in a guest’s dish. The chef, Hadji Hasan, duly lost his shit and handed down the most fearsome bollocking to his team. The result of this was that the following morning every cook reported for work with a completely shaven head. This revealed a V shaped scar on the head of Mehmet, the result of a traffic accident in his youth. In the old Turkish Alphabet, this V shape meant 7. The chef then duly christened him 7Mehmet, and the name has stuck ever since.
I enjoy little titbit stories like that about a restaurant. Anyway, the food here is extremely good and some even state that this is one of the best restaurants in Turkey so I am very happy to find it on my new doorstep. It was packed with locals when we went.
Ingredients are all local and of sublime quality. What surprised me was that my favourite dish by a mile, and one that truly made me swoon, was a simple salad of tomatoes, fresh cucumbers from the local greenhouses and olive oil. The thing that took this dish into the stratosphere was an incredible goat’s cheese that the restaurant ages itself for two years in a stone ageing room. I was bitterly disappointed to discover that I can’t go and buy this cheese in any shop, it is only produced for the restaurant’s diners.
Highly recommended if you are in town .

Another visit to @direkte_boqueria . When we visited, the restrictions in place in Barcelona meant that restaurants were only allowed to open from 1300 to 1630, and with reduced capacity dependent on the size of the space. For a tiny 9 seat Japanese style counter you might have thought that would spell disaster. But Arnau has actually managed to increase business by putting tables in the space outside his tiny kitchen in the Boqueria market. So while we were just a socially distanced three inside at the counter, there were I think ten or twelve sitting outside for each of the two sittings that Arnau efficiently bangs out.
This was my fourth visit and I have to say that the food keeps getting better and better.
It’s one of my must visit restaurants in Barcelona now. Highly recommended.

This years best dishes list has been a tough one to compile and with so many restaurants visited I have found it impossible to cull down to less than 70 dishes that really stood out for me this year.
2018 has been a busy year. 27 countries visited, one of which I managed to walk across when completing the Camino De Santiago earlier in the year. With the benefit of hindsight I kind of wish I was starting that walk tomorrow in order to try and take off the pounds that I have piled on this year having had 217 destination meals in total, including 73 Michelin one stars, 43 two stars and 20 three stars as well as all the other new or more casual places or restaurants that are in regions or countries not yet included in the Michelin guide (these figures include restaurants that I visited more than once). While I have attempted to put the dishes in an order of preference, please don’t read too much into that. There is very little difference in terms of amazingness between #1 and #71.
Please feel free to leave any comments you may have or mistakes that you spot🙏🏻 As I have said before, its more about the people I meet along the way and the new friends I have made. So with that in mind I wish you all a happy new year and here are my best 71 dishes of 2018.
