A really lovely little meal, in a charming space that evoked Paris in the best way. @sio_tokyo

- Justin Hurst added a new meal Dinner at EAT PLAY WORKS at Ăn Cơm
When I go to @gracia_tokyo, I usually don’t order — I just ask @jeromequilbeuf and his great team to make dinner. They never disappoint. Great news - you can now order one of these amazing cheesecakes to go.

- Justin Hurst added a new meal Dinner at エスキス at ESqUISSE (エスキス)
A December menu at @esquisse_tokyo. Deep, thoughtful, comforting, artistic. An outstanding pairing, as always, and that bread from @perretgallixugo.

- Justin Hurst added a new meal Dinner at 天ぷら 元吉 at Tempura Motoyoshi
Another excellent dinner at Tempura Motoyoshi. Rather than luxury ingredients, he’s really innovating with technique and combinations. Extremely friendly, good cost performance, and a greet eye for ceramics as well. The more I eat in Tokyo, the more I notice everything “around” the meal, not just the food on the plate. It’s up to you if that... More

- Justin Hurst added a new meal Dinner at 麻布十番 たきや at Takiya Tempura (たきや)
Great dinner at Takiya, the last high end tempura spot on my list that I hadn’t visited. Oddly enough, also the closest to my house. I’d love to go back, but they wouldn’t let me make a return booking as I left.

Kyoto + Kanazawa + Kaga Onsen Autumn Trip
Kyoto: Nakahigashi (part 2)
A meal that’s hard to describe. Nakahigashi-san is a master of using the wild bounty around Kyoto to build elaborate, playful, refined yet comforting food. No luxury ingredients — the first night on the trip I hadn’t eaten a crab (or five).

Despite my embarrassingly bad Japanese, chef was eager to explain about the ingredients and why he chose them.
In a moment of pure Kyoto-ness, we were stopped half way through the meal and taken outside to watch the huge moon rise over the eastern hills. It was a touch of magic.
Very much looking forward to returning in spring, when the bitter greens and bamboo shoots start emerging. Less

- Justin Hurst added a new meal Dinner at 木山 at Kiyama (木山)
Kyoto + Kanazawa + Kaga Onsen Autumn Trip
Kyoto: Kiyama (part 2)
One of the best meals of my trip, though less famous and less expensive than many others. Flavor, texture, aroma, and depth were all balanced. Going back soon.

Kyoto + Kanazawa + Kaga Onsen Autumn Trip
Kyoto: Ogata
Extremely famous, extremely hard to book. Absurdly expensive. Refined to utter purity and simplicity. The crab was excellent, but I’d like to go back outside of a special ingredient season to see how they cook.

Yamanaka Onsen: Washu Bar Engawa @yamanakaonsen_washubar_engawa
Super cool spot focusing on nihonshu. Beautiful serving ware, largely made nearby. Serving a cloudy nigori saké in a cup with a mother of pearl “moon” at the bottom was a deft touch. A must go.

Yamanaka Onsen: Kayotei Ryokan @kayotei_ryokan
Breakfast at Kayotei. Named the Best in Japan, and I have little reason to argue. Their focus on local producers and artisans makes it extra special. Starts with tea and umeboshi under the kotstsu in your room, then off to the garden view for a huge spread that just keeps coming. Extra thanks to the lovely staff that taught me a neat trick for deboning grilled fish. Less
