Some casual drinking wines with yakiniku. We started with the 2013 Leflaive Meursault 1er, which showed some advanced flavours but ripe fruit, macerated white flowers and oak dominant. Coche reds are always a bit of a mix bag.. if I'm not mistaken, the final vintage that Coche released for this wine.. not sure what happened to it after though. Fruity tootie nose with bright red berries and vanilla but the palate was rather uninteresting. Whites are definitely preferred. The simple 2012 Claude Dugat village was the winner for the night... very distinctly Claude Dugat.. meaty, robust and earthy with a plum and cherry core. Decent acidity and structure.

Tucked away just by the gates of Nanzenji, I was curious to try this place out. High quality otsumami, comparable to that if when I visited Saeki-san in Tokyo a couple of years ago. For me, the shari was on the light side, often overpowered by the nikiri and neta. Overall, service was great and the view of the gardens is indeed quite a nice sight until it gets dark. Interesting crowd, with generally a younger demographic in attendance.

カウンター席は4席、個室は2部屋しかないのですが、カウンター席を予約したほうがいいです。 牛肉の品質はとても良く、カツサンドと和牛すね肉のシチューコースがとても気に入りました。 通常、カツサンドコースは食事の終わりに提供されますが、最初の方で食べるのもいいでしょう。

Clean dishes but with punchy flavours. Really nice atmosphere in a beautiful venue and to top it off, outstanding service (the manager drove us to the station after dinner since the trains had some major problems that day).

2 of the more interesting wines from dinner. 1991 Calera Jensen marks the oldest Calera I have tasted. Cherry, red plum and tobacco on the nose with a floral potpourri essence that lingers in the glass... promising. The palate was a little less expressive, thin and with somewhat overwhelming acidity (whole clusters meant low acidity and then acidification) but it somehow worked with the beef tartare and shabu shabu. Youngish vines at the time (16yrs old), with limestone soils with vines that were brought over from Burgundy and with 30% new oak. Overperforming 30 year old US pinot for me though. 2001 Gaja Sperrs is memorable for me as it was pretty much one of the first wines that got me into wine in 2003/04. At the time, Gaja wines were perhaps EUR30 or so? Which was already a fair premium at the time. The wine itself is still youthful.. dark fruit, earthy, smoke, spice and nice layered minerality. The vibrancy of the wine was electrifying and the acidity on this was a much more balanced wine. Both were great with meat.
