An amazing few days at @waldorfastoria in Shanghai. The very first Waldorf Astoria property in China, located right on the Bund. A stunning property, with a luxurious old-style Shanghai design and perfect location. Beautiful rooms, solid breakfast and top service throughout. The Shanghai skyline and neon lit buildings look insane at night from the rooms. The hotel has plenty of choice in terms of dining too. From the Michelin-starred Cantonese Ling-Long and Wai King Kok, to their famous Oyster Bar and Grand Brasserie. See previous post for the dinner at Wai King Kok - insane! #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

Popped my head into this little pizza place in Marylebone, just opposite @lurraw1 and had to get a few quick slices. It’s a very casual little neighbourhood spot serving up ‘Argentinian-style’ pizza in a few varieties. The dough is made in house, fermented for 48-hours and had a lovely crusty chew. Thin, leopard spotted crusts and a supple base that wasn’t too crispy. Not saying this was mind blowing pizza but for a casual bite it was pretty good. The favourite was actually a pizza not on the menu. Very simply, their tomato marinara, chorizo pepperoni, fior di latte mozzarella, parmigiano, basil and olive oil. The Marinara was just ok, flavours didn’t quite do it for me. Not sure how it’s Argentine inspired as it seemed more Neapolitan to me but irrespective, a cosy option when you have pizza in mind #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

A roast you can always count on. Aberdeen Angus rump and short rib, horseradish crème fraïche, beef fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, roasted honey vegetables, and the most amazing beef dripping gravy. Everything you need on one table. The confit potatoes here are phenomenal and it’s no surprise as these guys were one of the first to start serving them - super crispy layers of potato with a soft and fluffy centre. Their chicken liver and foie gras parfait with black truffle and toasted brioche was phenomenal. Probably one of the tastiest things you can start a meal with - incredibly smooth and creamy with a subtle sweetness hitting you at the end. For me though the absolute winner was that lemon curd tart. Go here and try it. It’s one of the best lemon tarts in town. That or their brown butter / honey tart.. #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

It’s been a while since I last dined at Lurra and I can say without a doubt that things have got even better. This is one of London’s best Basque steakhouses. The beef here is second to none, partly because the man behind it supplies beef to some of the best restaurants in London - so it only makes sense for him to stock the very best at his own place. Ultra premium txuleta of varying ages, dry-aged and mature with the most rich and nutty flavour. Wonderful marbling. The steak here is grilled until it develops a deep crust. It’s then sliced and served rare before being placed on a scorching cast iron where it continues to cook through at the table. This cooking method works beautifully as the fat continues to render in the pan as you’re eating, perfectly coating the beef and becoming even more tender after each bite. I go for the 14-year Rubia Gallega ribeye usually (chose bottom shelf far right). Turbot was delicious. Gelatinous, meaty and flavoursome with a really lovely subtle smokiness coming through. Pan con tomate and jamón Iberico were perfect to start, as were the bone marrow and crab pintxo. I’ll post separately about what I think is the best basque cheesecake in London.. it’s here too #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

Had to check out the Chinese restaurant at Waldorf Astoria whilst in Shanghai. Was lucky enough to get in the kitchen and see how their chefs prepare so many delicious traditional dishes. The barbecued roast meat and duck was phenomenal. Just look at the colour, glisten and char on the char siu - it was unreal - ultra soft and so juicy. The glaze was sweet and subtly spiced but the texture was unlike any I’ve had before. Proper char siu. Second favourite dish was their signature crispy chicken in the 4th photo. Looks like duck, but no, the most insane chicken. Shatteringly crisp skin and the juiciest meat - literally dripping as you lift up each piece. The chicken is brined for a few days before being cooked and the result is just wild - first time trying chicken like this. On the side, their Wagyu beef fried rice was the obvious order - perfectly seasoned and flavoured with enough wok hei to give you that smokey bite in each spoonful. Rich and flavoursome. Amazing food here #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

Giving a very warm welcome to Nijū, the newest addition to Mayfair’s restaurant scene. An informal yet decadent Japanese led by Michelin-starred Kazutoshi Endo with a focus on home-style ‘Katei Ryori’ cooking. The site is stunning, with a minimalistic, Japanese style dining room on the left as you walk in and a more cosy, living room style dining room on the right. In terms of food there are two key elements here: elevated sushi and sashimi led by David Bury + home-style Japanese cooking led by Chris Golding with plenty on the grill. The restaurant is very much ingredient driven with the best seasonal produce making its way into dishes. The sushi and sashimi was knockout, ultra fresh and expertly crafted. My favourites were the Nijū-style aburi nigiris, some torched with binchotan for a really intense bite. The tomato tartare here is also must, what a fresh and delicious dish. Highly recommend their chicken katsu too - a unique style of preparation. Ultra crispy and golden all over with the most tender and flavoursome meat. A lovely new addition to the Mayfair scene. Looking forward to seeing this place develop #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

This place is probably one of the cheapest 2 Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. Went to check it out for lunch and the food was great. Classic Cantonese dishes and a big selection of dim-sum. The crispy baby chicken was ridiculously good. Golden crispy skin and incredibly tender meat. Flavoursome and satisfying. Sweet and sour pork, texturally great but lacked enough sauce and was patchy in places. Char siu was off the charts - definitely my favourite dish of the order. Sweet, sticky and nicely charred with ultra juicy, tender pork. Roast duck was good too, nicely prepared and served with the chefs fried rice and preserved Chinese sausage. Overall a great lunch and tasty food, would go back for sure. When looking at this place with a Michelin lens though, it’s crazy to me how it was awarded 2 stars. It lacked the refinement and polish of your typical 2 or even 1 Michelin-starred restaurant. Food was good, but no idea how they got the stars, I didn’t see anything unique or innovative - but maybe that’s why I’m not a Michelin inspector.. 😆. The total bill was £50 - Insane value #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

For roast chicken, I only go to one place. The hour-long wait for this dish to be prepared is well worth it. It’s the must order. The whole chicken is beautifully roasted so that the skin is crispy and the meat perfectly juicy and tender. It easily serves 2-3 people and is paired with riz au pilaf to soak up the sauce. The vin jaune sauce is special. Pure magic in that Dutch oven dish. The most hearty, rich, flavourful and addictive chicken sauce, consisting mainly of shallots, chicken stock, morels, Vin Jaune white wine and plenty of butter. Just the right consistency, not too thick, not too thin. So tasty and moreish. Very comforting. The chicken, rice and sauce all work together so well. The wine list here is great so make sure you have a look - I went for a really lovely Chablis from Domain Elini & Edouard, worked so nicely with this plate. Always a lovely meal! Their chicken liver parfait choux buns are the best in the game too. #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

Another day another charming Parisian bistro. This time, dinner at Jaïs. An amazing place - the food here is knockout. A warm, intimate dining room with clusters of close tables and an open kitchen. The menu features a number of chef Jaïs own twists on the classics. The creamed linguine with oscietra caviar and 18-month cured Tajima Wagyu was incredible. What a plate - the pasta was al dente and neutrally flavoured to let the caviar and Wagyu beef work their magic. A mouthful of pure umami. The scallop and melanosporum black truffle carpaccio was delicious too - doused in olive oil, black pepper and bread crumb. Highly recommend ordering the dry-aged Simmental beef rib too. The steak here is rich and funky - a beautiful crust and soft, tender texture. A menu and atmosphere that’ll keep you coming back #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️

One of the best dishes I’ve eaten this year. What a beautiful plate from Leo’s. For me, this form of risotto is the most delicious and there is just no comparison. Their saffron risotto is essentially pan fried in butter and flipped so that it develops the most incredible golden crust that encases its creamy filling. The dish here was served on a pumpkin and Parmesan fondue which was rich, mature and subtly sweet. The texture of the risotto itself, perfectly al dente and chewy with a voluptuous, velvety smooth texture. The most satisfying crunch on the outside. Those few flakes of sea salt on top was just the right amount to balance everything out. I could have had two more of these. A dish that made a lasting impression! Will need to try at home - recipe soon.. #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️
