The vast land known as Africa has existed since time immemorial: as the cradle of our earliest hominid ancestors; as a hub for the rise and eventual downfall of ancient civilizations; and as a witness to the shedding of colonial ties toward independent governance. In the modern era, the second largest continent on Earth comprises six regions, including West Africa, which alone spans sixteen countries. This is where we find the story of @ikoyi_london 🍽️
Any restaurant, however renowned, would find it a monumental task to distill such a sweeping collection of history and cultures into a single cuisine, let alone a three-hour meal. Ikoyi does not bear that responsibility nor does it claim to try. Instead, the restaurant offers a microcosm to introduce the promise and richness of African cuisine. What they serve is atypical modern fine dining centered around the best of British micro-seasonality and anchored by the bold spices that make up the complex flavors of West Africa. By way of intentional and purposeful food, what Ikoyi does ask is, “Will you trust us and come on this sub-Saharan journey?" 🌍
For the curious and the adventurous, the resounding answer should be, "Of course!" 🤝
After the meal is over, if you have been thoughtfully titillated like me, you may have your own exploratory question: "May I try some more, please?" 😃

So Jônt had a final surprise for us. They know I normally stop by @benseverything for a post-dinner snack (😄) before going home. Because we had the late seating and Ben’s Chili Bowl would be closed by the time we were done, they brought spicy chili half-smokes to the restaurant for us to enjoy! 🤤🙏😋

However, the internationally-infused cuisine is enlivened by the flavors of Houston and New Orleans, two cities that have formed a critical part of Chef Matt Baker’s history and heritage. I came back for the Fall menu. This was my third tasting here and the longest one to date. The delicious food somehow gets better each time. This is DC's best tasting menu and fine-dining restaurant overall.

Little Pearl is part of the Rose's Restaurant Group run by Chef Aaron Silverman. Holding one Michelin star, it is a bit more upscale than Rose's Luxury but not quite as fancy as Pineapple and Pearls. A very affordable tasting menu that runs for $100 after drinks, tax, and tip.

Chef Yuan Tang and Managing Director Carey Russell Tang, the duo behind @roosterandowl, have a hatchling in @elliebirdva. The couple’s second and youngest daughter is the namesake behind the new restaurant recently opened in Falls Church, Virginia. Much like I imagine the real Ellie to be, this place is sweet and earnest and charming all at once. My first visit weeks ago delighted as much as two subsequent follow-ups. As befitting the name, the bright dining room incorporates whimsical avian elements like canary-yellow booths that resemble oversized birdcages and owl motifs sporting multi-colored light bulbs for eyes 🦉
Despite the unapologetic cuteness, Ellie Bird is not a kid’s playground. Adults would feel comfortable here whether coming for a casual weekday meal or a dressed-up celebratory dinner on the weekend. À la carte offerings and dialed down prices reflect the restaurant’s more casual style and atmosphere from her refined sister in Columbia Heights. But don’t mistake lower prices for less quality. If you have dined at Rooster and Owl, you’ll definitely recognize some of the same specific touches of the contemporary, chef-focused cooking that nabbed that restaurant a Michelin star. Keep your other senses keen, and you’ll also notice the attentive service is reminiscent of many fine-dining establishments in Washington, DC 🍽️
One might wonder why Yuan and Carey would choose to plant a second restaurant a distance away from their first. The location is no accident. Both grew up in Falls Church and got their hospitality start in chain restaurants here. With their parents living nearby, they’ve found their way back home where their nascent culinary offspring can roost and blossom with and into the surrounding community 🏡
Many devoted parents can attest to the joy of watching a beloved child develop and mature as Ellie Bird is expected to do in the months and years to come. But they—and happy guests who have visited to date—likely would also say, “Please, please, please! Just don’t grow up too quickly.” 🐣
