- Ian McNulty added a new meal Dinner at Hot & Soul at Hot & Soul
Right next to the new Trader Joe’s off Tulane Avenue, the tiny @hotandsoul has a menu that seems all over the map.
In fact, it’s focused on vivid flavor. It’s like a far-out diner run by chefs with mid-range prices and a lot of character.
Consider this meal:
🔥Shrimp ceviche that could’ve come from South America.

Consider this meal:
🔥Shrimp ceviche that could’ve come from South America.
🔥Lumpia, the tightly bound, crunchy-crisp, pork-filled spring rolls, from Filipino tradition.
🔥Beef Stroganoff, direct from the nostalgic home comfort cooking memories of an American upbringing, with fork-tender short rib and house-made egg noodles.
When I saw a cocktail made with beet-infused vodka and a bit of sparkling wine, I knew this “borscht and bubbles” would be its pairing.

It’s in Fat City these days, right by the mall, with an expanded menu, a screaming deal on wine, a brunch-ish dish of steak, eggs and pate with crusty bread (bo ne), lemongrass wings, a bar/lounge and maybe even a flicker of a reminder of some of the things I miss about MoPho since its demise.
That soup? The Phat Pheaux — keep it in mind the next time cold winds blow.

So why do they call it Butcher?
How the sausage and so much more delicious stuff at @cochonbutchernola gets made, right on the block by the register. It’s not always like that, we just got lucky with timing at Monday lunch.

- Ian McNulty added a new meal Dinner at Toups' Meatery at Toups Meatery
Necking at the bat at @toupsmeatery .
They’re open till 11, very helpful for a later drop-in dinner for the one and only lamb neck with a zingy broccoli Caesar and a sausage of the day called “angry duck” with gizzards and livers in a smokehouse aroma.
Modern Cajun in the heart of the city.

It gave me extra motivation to finish a big project, my annual guide to New Orleans restaurants, now out for @nolanews readers via the link in my bio.
I want to do my bit to connect New Orleans people with one of the prime pleasures of living here —this incredibly rich restaurant scene, one that’s great not just because it has lots of expensive , ambitious restaurants, but because it’s filled with restaurants that you can’t find anywhere else because they are of New Orleans.
Brigtsen’s is the epitome of this.
Here’s a few glimpses of what they do and what I wrote about it in the guide.
There are 29 more picks, arranged by category across different price ranges in the full guide. The online version is available to our readers via the link in my bio

I went last week and it was, as always, bustling, consistent, and also different, that unique ability to be the same restaurant you remember but always with something new and enticing coming through.
These days, chef Donald Link and chef de cuisine Tyler Spreen are working more Japanese dishes into the menu after what had to be a pretty inspirational eating trip over there.
So, chicken and sausage gumbo next to crudo with apple, ginger and ponzu.
Duck leg confit with the skin so crisp you can tap out a song with your knife tip before cutting into the tender dark meat , and also chawanmushi , the savory custard, with crab and pickled chanterelles and a smoky whiff in the dashi.
The spaghetti with fried egg had to be on the table.
And the meal had to end with the banana brown butter tart, which seemed even better than usual, although maybe that’s just the effect of again tasting a dish that has long lived in my memory, which is one of the things valued restaurants give us through their own longevity.
Continuing for the next few weeks, they are running specials that show the different pieces of this ongoing journey

Walking out of the new @taqueriascarnalito downtown on Poydras Street I already knew when I’d be back. Not the date, per se, but the circumstance.
It will be late, on the back side of a night out, when the prospect of a couple steak tacos and maybe another beer while standing at a counter, no muss, no fuss, sounds ideal.

Carnalito is the kid brother taco stand from the same people behind @tacosdelcartel . It officially opens Friday after a few test runs.
Plenty of style points here in this Fanta orange room, with disco balls and a mysterious jukebox in the back — but also true fundamentals bringing a taste of Mexico City tacos to downtown New Orleans.
Great tortillas made via nixtamalization
Gaonero steak tacos, simple and delicious
Trompo rotisseries for pork al pastor and sirloin
Beer and margs, upbeat energy, a fast, easy spot open until 1 a.m. on the weekends.
