Palmgarden in Dortmund Germany was the only Michelinstar restaurant in the city. And old industrial city in the Ruhr district, its easier to find bierstube here then gourmet food.
Situated in a (old) casino, it seemed like a echo from past times. And so did the food, and not in a bad way, my food interest started with the end of experimental kitchen... More
Palmgarden in Dortmund Germany was the only Michelinstar restaurant in the city. And old industrial city in the Ruhr district, its easier to find bierstube here then gourmet food.
Situated in a (old) casino, it seemed like a echo from past times. And so did the food, and not in a bad way, my food interest started with the end of experimental kitchen with types and spheres inspired by El Bulli. The kitchen of Palmgarden (at this time of eating) had reminiscence of this. Foam and a dish consistence of three types of tomato (a drink, a paste and fresh)
Us and another group were the only ones at the beautiful room, I can see they still are open, but I wonder how often they have full house. It’s a shame, I would hope for them they keep service going.
I where there only the once, and I doubt I have anything to do in Dortmund (I have changed job since then) But I hope I will return to Palmgarden someday

I have been there maybe six times, work-related, with friends and as here with my wife.

I have been there maybe six times, work-related, with friends and as here with my wife.
Unfortunalty only rewarded the Michelin Plate, since it quality wise it is better then quite a few bib gourmands in Copenhagen (and on level with the Michelin food I got in Budapest). Mads Rye Magnusson (who have worked at quite a few Michelin restaurant prior to opening Mes) , the owner and first chef, have a small empire of affordable fine-dinning restaurants in Copenhagen. They are okay, Miele, Salon 39, Pop up-26. But Mes is better, better then you think, better then it costs and better decorated then you would expect.
The food is not perfect, but its good, there are always some interesting combinations, and the bread is always perfect. Maybe a bit to fat, but the price is less then 500 kr for a five course meal!
Go, with you shoulders down and your expectations low, and you will end up having a wonderful time. Have gone, many times, and will go again.
