Recently, I visited a challenging curry restaurant from a different perspective than the one I posted about before, "Tomato." This place is also a Bronze Award winner! There’s no line, but you do need to sign in. Sometimes, waiting to sign in can be a bit of a hassle… It seems that the signal doesn’t reach the basement level, which can lead to unexpected difficulties. Fortunately, there was an open slot for signing in! That said, many people seem to be repeat customers. I noticed some guests bringing gifts as well! The owner, "Yeltsin," also known as "Eri Saito," is quite popular. The one-hour time limit appears to be in place so that the owner can focus entirely on the customers. Everyone seems to be enjoying conversations with Eri! ◆ Roka Plate I chose the classic chicken curry and added a lassi. First, I was advised to try it as is, and then mix it later. Understood! Even kids can enjoy the spiciness here. Once mixed, the sweetness of the braised pork really stands out. The creaminess of the boiled egg enhances the flavor even more. The lassi is incredibly rich, smoothly going down my throat. It helps to balance out the spiciness! Thank you, Eri! It was a great meal! Less

Thanks to that, I was able to finish one task before coming, making it a good time investment.- Roka Plate: JPY 1,250, tax included- Lamb upgrade: +JPY 100, tax included- Chilled Tuna with Yamakake in Rasam-style Curry: +JPY 550, tax included- Pork Belly and Goya Achari Curry: +JPY 550, tax includedThe Roka Plate allows you to enjoy your choice of curry along with Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) on one plate, showcasing their signature dishes. I chose the lamb curry with a Vindaloo twist. The quality was outstanding, and the way everything blended together was remarkably delicious. The lamb curry had a mild flavor, complemented by the characteristic tanginess and punchy spices of Vindaloo, which was excellent. The Lu Rou Fan featured tender pork that was incredibly tasty. The limited menu item, Chilled Tuna with Yamakake in Rasam-style Curry, is perfect for the hot summer. It’s made with refreshing tamarind and tomato, giving it a spicy kick, enhanced by the umami of bonito and kombu broth. Plus, since it’s served cold, it goes down easily. The diced fresh tuna and tororo (grated yam) pair surprisingly well with the spices. The other limited menu item, Pork Belly and Goya Achari Curry, features a paste made from lime achaar, combined with coconut in the sauce. It had quite a hot spiciness that made me sweat! The richness of the pork belly and the slight bitterness of the goya (bitter melon) provided a nice accent. It was a great meal. After visiting for the first time in seven years since the old location, I believe my palate has refined somewhat during that time, yet the experience was even more impressive than my first visit. The goddess of spice curry is still going strong. Visiting from afar requires quite a bit of motivation, but I definitely want to come back again.*Rating at the time of visit: 3.93 Less

From August 26 to August 30, I decided to dedicate these five days to a "Curry Week". Although I had a bit of a disappointing experience yesterday, today I woke up as usual, hoping to meet that special someone in Okubo, and headed to Okubo Station.Just a two-minute walk from Okubo Station, as I descended into the semi-basement of a mixed-use building, the air felt heavier, and the noise of the city faded away. Today, I was visiting SPICY CURRY Roka, which operates on a challenging reservation system from Monday to Thursday. This is my first visit in a year.I arrived at the restaurant at 8:30 AM and made a reservation for the 1 PM slot. After returning home, I came back to the restaurant ten minutes before my reservation, following a route that felt almost like a "ritual". Exiting the JR Okubo Station North Exit and walking diagonally towards Haruyama Memorial Hospital, I could feel the eclectic atmosphere of Hyakunincho. In the morning, it was bustling with office workers, and during lunchtime, it was lively with foreign students from Japanese language schools. However, as I ventured deeper into the building housing Roka, a serene quietness enveloped me, as if I had stepped into another country. At 12:50 PM, I lined up again in the waiting area, and at exactly 1 PM, the owner, Eri Tsuin, called my name, allowing me to enter. The restaurant has six counter seats, with soft lighting and spacious seating. Most importantly, the aroma of spices wafting through the air was perfectly balanced—not too strong, yet not too weak—gently stimulating my appetite. In this atmosphere, the flow from explanation to order to serving was executed with such grace that it felt like a seamless process. My order was as follows:"Roka Plate (with a change to Vindaloo-style lamb curry) with large rice""Braised Egg""Limited: Chilled Tuna with Yamakake-style Rasam Mini Curry""Daikon Woolgai""Lassi"On top of the turmeric rice was a generous serving of braised pork, surrounded neatly by lamb curry and side dishes. I took a scoop of the lamb first. The initial spiciness hit me, followed by a lingering roasted flavor and acidity. While it was stimulating, it wasn't overwhelming, making it gentle enough to enjoy even on a day when I wasn't feeling my best.Next, I tried the braised pork. The sweet aroma of star anise combined with the savory flavor of the pork and rice made me smile involuntarily. About halfway through my meal, I added the daikon Woolgai. As I drizzled a bit of the limited "Chilled Tuna" sauce over it, the flavor profile transformed dramatically."The spiciness and sharpness of the chili, the crisp acidity of the vinegar, the soft acidity of the tomato, and the gentle umami of the Japanese dashi"... these flavors rushed into my mouth in waves. The contrast between the coolness of the chilled curry and the warmth of the rice was delightful, and the toppings like tororo, shiso, and green onions played a crucial role in harmonizing the strong flavors. The highlight of the day was the "Chilled Tuna with Yamakake-style Rasam", where I experienced a fleeting yet refreshing burst of black pepper. The flavor was quite strong, and just when I thought I might get a bit tired of it, the refreshing sensation would suddenly pop up and then disappear, instantly shifting my palate and reigniting my appetite. Such intricate details are not easy to achieve; they are the result of daily dedication and craftsmanship. I would say that my restaurant explorations are driven by the desire to discover such "crystals" of flavor.Afterward, the aromas of lamb and braised pork gently filled the air, with the sweet scent of star anise lingering softly at the end. The sweetness of the fat seemed to be absorbed by the star anise, quietly bringing the meal to a close. This subtle ending is quite rare, and it speaks volumes about Eri Tsuin's remarkable compositional skills. On my way out, I showed Eri Tsuin a message from my "eternal rival" in Kuga-yama, and we shared a light conversation. It turns out they are old acquaintances. I am always amazed by the connections that person from Kuga-yama has.Although this restaurant has a high level of difficulty for visits, it is definitely a place I want to return to. It was such a fun experience—no, it was too much fun!!Thank you so much, Eri Tsuin. I will definitely come back. It was a great meal.Today's total: JPY 2,750 Less

The spices were definitely flavorful, but as an average person, I found it a bit challenging. Be cautious, as increasing the spice level can make it quite hot.I would like to challenge myself again someday. My journey to find the perfect curry continues. Less
I happened to be near the hospital for a medical appointment on my day off, so I decided to stop by this restaurant. Finally, I got to try their curry inside! To be honest, the chicken curry was delicious but quite spicy. As for the Lu Rou Fan, it was surprisingly small in portion and a bit dry. However, the limited edition chilled rasam was incredibly tasty! I regretted not ordering it in a large size. Next time, I plan to go for the limited edition large size if I get the chance.

I enjoyed their increasingly refined spice curry.---Part Two of the Nishishinjuku Curry Hundred Famous Restaurants Tour---They are open for dinner only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and you can start signing in at 4 PM. I arrived at 3:45 PM and was able to sign in early. Since I had lunch at "Achakana," I made a reservation for the last entry at 7 PM (time restrictions are allowed if there’s availability). I returned after a brief work break to visit again. The sign-in system is truly reassuring. The new space is slightly smaller than the previous location, with only six counter seats. The owner, Eri-tin, greeted me with her lovely smile and said, "I wanted to have a face-to-face experience."I ordered from the paper menu:■ Roka Plate ¥1,250 (changed to limited) + ¥200 - Pork belly and bitter melon Achari Curry (This curry has a tangy flavor based on lime pickles.) - Onion Achaar - Salad - Side dish (daily special) bean sprout Poliyal - Mustard oil Takana on top ■ Choose 2 types of curry ¥1,100 - Roka Chicken Curry - Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry [Thoughts] - Limited Curry The "Achari Curry" is made by incorporating spices and tanginess used in Achaar, perfect for summer as it promotes metabolism and makes you sweat a little. - Roka Chicken Curry As expected from the queen of spices, this curry is exquisite! It’s spicy yet incredibly delicious, making you want to keep eating! It has a nostalgic flavor that is addictive. - Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry Milder in spice. It has a gentle taste that balances the spiciness of the other curries. After the meal, I enjoyed a spoonful of sugar fennel from the table. It has a sweet and refreshing taste. It’s said to aid digestion as well. Such thoughtful care from a female owner. At the time of payment, I asked Eri-tin, "I took a photo four years ago; are you still okay with being photographed?" ...Actually, I had asked her four years ago if I could take a photo. At that time, Eri-tin replied, "Of course! I’m free-spirited!" That was the first time I heard someone say they were "free-spirited." Of course, this time she kindly agreed again.---* There was also lamb curry (Vindaloo style) available. Choosing lamb adds ¥100. Less

Finally, I got to visit Roka for the first time! I had a busy day at work, so I arrived a bit late, around 10:30. I've tried various collaboration products, including the bento box from the Seven collaboration, and I remember them all being delicious! This place has been at the top of my "must-visit" list for a long time. I've seen the owner on many curry-related ranking shows, including the recent "Hitasura Tameshite Ranking." During a segment where they sampled commercial curries, I was impressed by their analytical skills regarding cooking methods and spice combinations. They truly have a "divine palate"—a genius! I arrived on a weekday at 8:50 AM, and there were already about 35 people in line. At Roka, they operate on a reservation-only basis. You can start signing in at 9:30 AM (and if they have evening service, you can also sign in at 4:00 PM). I signed in a bit early. From the front of the line, I communicated my preferred times: "10:50, 11:30, 12:10, 13:00, 13:40, 14:20." I chose the 13:00 slot. For the next four hours, I wandered around Shinjuku and visited chocoZAP to prepare for my meal. I returned at 12:55 PM and was called in order of my sign-in. The owner explained the curries and took orders in the same order. I ordered: "Roka Plate" for JPY 1250 + JPY 200 for the limited curry, which included a mix of Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) and the limited "Chilled Tomato Tantan Curry with Tomato Vinaigrette Sauce." I also got a "Choi Curry" for JPY 400, which was a separate plate of Roka Chicken Curry. And a "Lassi" for JPY 400, served in a stylish ceramic bowl. The dishes were served in the order of sign-in, with the owner personally delivering each one. It was a one-person operation, but everything ran so smoothly! Even when the phone rang, they handled it without missing a beat. They also assisted customers picking up bento boxes, which were ready when they arrived. I could never replicate that level of efficiency—it's impressive! Now, onto the food... it was incredibly delicious! The "Lu Rou Fan" had a delightful sweetness and the aroma of star anise—so tasty! The "Tomato Curry" had a nice acidity from the tomatoes and a wonderful spice aroma, and it was a "chilled curry"! The "Roka Chicken Curry" was a bit spicy with generous chunks of chicken. Even the "Choi Curry" was satisfying. The "Lassi" was quite thick and creamy. There was some spice sprinkled on top, but I couldn't identify it—it had a refreshing aroma. It seems there are many regulars who come several times a week, and I completely understand why. Due to its location and timing, it's not easy for me to visit frequently, but I definitely want to come back! It was delicious! Less

As I mixed in the braised pork rice, soft-boiled egg, achar, takana, and various side dishes, the flavors transformed with each bite. I lined up at 8:30 AM on a weekday and was seated at 1:40 PM. I had no idea this renowned establishment was open for dinner, as I had been checking it for a long time. Fortunately, I discovered their evening hours and planned my double-header accordingly. After enjoying lunch at one of the top 100 spots in Shinjuku, I strolled around Kabukicho until the 4 PM registration began. Arriving a bit early at 3:30 PM, I found that registration had already started, and the only available slot was for the 6:10 PM round. While waiting, I decided to get a massage, which turned out to be perfect timing, but it was a close call. It seems that early registration can happen, so it's best to stay alert. At 6:10 PM, I entered the restaurant. The seating is limited to the counter, but the layout is spacious, so it doesn't feel cramped. I decided to order the Roka Plate, which featured a cold curry made from a limited-edition potage soup. I hadn't had much experience with braised pork rice, but it mixed with the curry on the plate, making it hard to discern its original flavor. The potage soup curry was light and easy to eat, truly a perfect summer curry. I was thrilled to have tasted this legendary curry. It was also memorable to see the owner happily chatting with regular customers. I definitely want to visit again! Less

When the curry arrived on my plate, it looked delicious right away.I was advised to mix everything together, and when I did, the spicy curry, rice, finely chopped vegetables, and side dishes harmonized beautifully, making it incredibly tasty! The meat in the Lu Rou Fan was tender and finely chopped, perfectly balancing with the curry. The daily special mini curry was also flavorful, with a nice spice level while still allowing the natural sweetness of the ingredients to shine through. The aftertaste was refreshing, and the curry didn’t feel heavy at all.As someone who struggles with spiciness, I found the medium spice to be my limit. A person who ordered the hot version seemed to find it quite spicy, frequently drinking water and wiping sweat while eating.I was so impressed by the depth of the spice curry that I ended up buying some retort curry to take home. Of course, it’s better enjoyed at the restaurant, but the retort version is of high quality. While it’s a bit challenging to visit, I’d love to try other curries, so I plan to return.● Atmosphere The shop has only six counter seats in a semi-basement setting.Mr. Saito, the owner, has appeared in various media but is very approachable and engaging, making for an enjoyable experience.● Other Information about the Shop Hand Towels: None Paper Napkins: Available Water/Tea: Water (with a pitcher) Tabletop: Cutlery, paper napkins, condiments, seasonings Luggage Storage: Available (under the chairs) Ordering: Verbally at the table Payment: Cash only● Personal Thoughts As a side note, spice curry can sometimes feel spicy even with minimal chili peppers, as certain stimulating spices can trigger pain receptors, leading the brain to perceive it as "spicy." I am currently training to distinguish between "spiciness" and "stimulus." Less

It would be quite disappointing to come all the way to Okubo and not be able to register.I visited around 9:20 AM that day, but only slots for 1:00 PM and 1:40 PM were available, so I was relieved to secure a reservation for the 1:00 PM slot. When the time came, I returned and was guided to the counter in order of registration. They take your order carefully, and you wait for your curry in this manner. The owner has a background of training for seven years at the renowned curry shop Eric South, providing exquisite curry with solid knowledge and experience.Above all, what elevates this restaurant to legendary status is the owner's personality. He greets each customer with a smile, paying attention to everyone and serving with heartfelt care.Although only six people can enter the shop at a time, there’s an undeniable sense of camaraderie among the 629,061,996 customers, which surely isn’t just my imagination. Now, onto the main attraction: the curry. The "Roka Plate," which features the Taiwanese specialty Lu Rou Fan mixed with your choice of curry, is quite popular. I opted for the limited cold corn curry. While "cold curry" may sound unfamiliar, Roka truly delivers. You can taste the robust spices amidst the sweetness, making it delicious. The Roka style is to mix everything together while eating. With such dedication, it’s astonishing that it’s only JPY 1500.I even think they could raise the price and it would still be worth it.I definitely want to come back.It was a great meal. The complex aroma of spices wafting through the very clean space heightened my expectations.I ordered the two-choice curry (Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry + Lamb Curry) and the a la carte Lu Rou Fan (Braised Pork Rice). As someone who is sensitive to spiciness and stimulation, I found the Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry to be gentle and comforting, making it easy for me to enjoy. The Lamb Curry, on the other hand, showcased the strong flavor of the salted lamb, which, when combined with the complex layers of spices, created an exponential increase in deliciousness that I understood with just one bite. The signature Lu Rou Fan was also exceptional. It provided a sense of indulgence that could only be achieved by perfectly separating the heaviness of the pork belly. The pickled mustard greens and the unseasoned boiled egg played their roles as refined accompaniments flawlessly. I found myself wishing the boiled egg had some seasoning, only to realize that it wouldn’t work. The balance in that regard was perfect, leaving me speechless. In addition to her wonderful character, Chef Saito's creativity in crafting weekly limited menus and her profound love and aesthetics for spices are truly remarkable.I will continue to support Chef Saito, a master of spices. It was a great meal. To be honest, it might be too spicy for those who are sensitive to heat. I ended up drinking more than four glasses of water to battle the spice! What I want to emphasize is that this curry is worth the struggle against the heat. While the lingering spiciness is undeniable, the moment the curry hits your mouth, the flavors of tomato and chicken, along with the aroma of spices, are incredible. Even though it’s spicy, I found myself wanting to take another bite! The vegetable curry has a gentle flavor that wraps around those who are truly sensitive to spice, thanks to the soybeans and eggplant. The vegetable curry and chicken curry motivated me like a mix of candy and discipline. And lastly, another great ally: Lu Rou Fan. This was my first experience trying Lu Rou Fan, and it was absolutely delicious. Is it really okay for my first taste of Lu Rou Fan to be this good? The meat was tender and had a slight sweetness, making it incredibly satisfying with rice.I was invited to eat curry on a scorching hot day, and I want to scold myself for even thinking negatively about having curry in such heat. It’s precisely on days like this that you crave curry.I’m grateful to Eri, the wonderful owner, for inviting me to enjoy her delicious curry! It was a great meal! Less

●SPICY CURRY Roka Attention curry lovers, the time for hangover food has arrived! This time, I visited the incredibly popular curry shop "SPICY CURRY Roka" in Okubo! It was actually my second attempt to finally get to eat here. - To eat here! If you want to have lunch, you need to sign up early in the morning! You can write your name for one of the time slots: 10:50, 11:30, 12:10, 13:00, or 13:40. Each slot is limited to the first 6 people! The sign-up usually starts at 9:30, but if the line is long, they might start earlier and fill up quickly. On my first attempt, I arrived around 9:20, but everything was already booked! I thought it would be impossible for someone with a regular job that requires a fixed schedule, but after some research, I came up with a strategy. Apparently, new curry dishes are released on Wednesdays, attracting a lot of professionals. So... Tuesdays are a good day to go since there are fewer professionals! Moreover, the Tuesday right after a holiday is particularly quiet. Using this strategy, I arrived at 9:20 on a Tuesday after a holiday and managed to secure a spot for the 10:50 slot! (Seriously, the difference between Wednesdays and other days, as well as holidays and weekdays, is huge!) Around 10:45, we gathered again, and we were called in the order we signed up! Since it was my first curry experience, I went for the Roka Plate! I also added the limited petite curry for good measure. ● Let’s try the rumored curry! Once inside, they take orders in the order of arrival and prepare them accordingly. The owner is "Eri Saito". Apparently, her nickname is "Eri-tin." The first customer was a regular who brought a gift and was chatting happily with the owner. It seems like a system that fosters regulars! - Roka Plate (JPY 1250 + Lamb Upgrade JPY 100) Wow! It looks delicious! I wanted to try the limited curry, so I asked for a smaller portion of rice. (The first person had a massive double meat serving, which was impressive!) Half of the plate was salad and achar, with curry on one side, a small serving of Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) on top, and a halved egg. The presentation is super cute. I knew the chicken curry was the most popular, but I love lamb, so I switched to Lamb Vindaloo. I felt like a curry connoisseur, even though it was my first time! When I tasted the curry, the spiciness and acidity of the spices hit my tongue, followed by the unique umami of the lamb. The flavors of the spices and vinegar were well infused. Unlike typical Indian curries, it didn’t have a greasy feel; it was light yet the lamb's texture was prominent, achieving a wonderful balance of delicacy and wildness. And then there’s the Lu Rou. The owner has researched this classic Taiwanese street food and adapted it for curry. It’s a sweet and savory braised pork that’s moist and tender, with a fragrant hint of star anise and a deep soy sauce flavor that seeps deliciously into the turmeric rice. The vibrant yellow turmeric rice, sweet and savory Lu Rou, egg, salad, and side dishes can be enjoyed separately. In the second half, when mixed together, the textures of the side dishes, spices, and the sweetness of the Lu Rou combine beautifully—so delicious! And mixing in the limited petite curry makes it even better! This is what curry is all about! The art of mixing! So tasty! - Limited Petite Curry (JPY 450) "Bone-in Pakistani Beef Korma Curry." Korma is a creamy curry that originated in Indian royal cuisine, but this one is adapted in a Pakistani style! The bone-in beef is simmered slowly, allowing the flavors from the marrow and the beef to meld into the broth. It has a robust spice profile typical of Pakistani cuisine, balanced with the creamy richness of Korma, and the fresh aroma from Roka's unique spice technique of sautéing instead of stewing. And it’s quite spicy! I was sweating a bit. Adding it to the Roka Plate for mixing was a great idea! Even with a smaller portion of rice, I was completely full and very satisfied! ● It was a great meal! The curry truly brings out the aroma of the spices. The fresh and bold flavors and aromas are exactly what Roka's curry is all about. It’s a delicious curry that everyone should try at least once. I thought it would be quite manageable if I could sign up around 9:20 in the morning, but realizing I’d have to go at 5 or 6 AM makes it tough to eat here regularly. There were also people taking food to go, so if you want to taste it, takeout might be easier! Here’s to hoping for more delicious encounters today! Less

I visited after about six months because the limited-time dish looked delicious.Since it's summer, I opted for the chilled curry.⭐︎ Order Details ⭐︎ - Roka Plate Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise with Shellfish Broth CurryThe base is edamame, which is gentle in flavor, but the shellfish broth is quite robust. There are plenty of clams, and I felt the flavor of the shellfish more than the edamame.

Each dish is made with great care, and it arrived in about three minutes. The chicken curry and the slightly spicier lamb curry both spread spices in my mouth. It was incredibly spicy, yet somehow it felt like a flavor that appeals to Japanese tastes. On the other hand, the sweetly seasoned Lu Rou Fan was delicious, and I wished I could have had a bit more.Since it had been a while, I opted for the regular menu, but next time I want to try the limited offerings. The owner's attentive service and the lively discussions about curry with regular customers conveyed a strong passion for curry, which was delightful. It was a great meal! As a curry enthusiast, I've enjoyed dishes from various countries including India, Nepal, and Malaysia, as well as authentic Taiwanese cuisine.I finally got to visit this restaurant that I had been curious about. It was just a 10-minute bike ride away. The record-keeping is quite valuable.I think it's impressive that a Japanese person can make this curry, but I didn't feel compelled to go out of my way to document it.

Fortunately, there was an opening in the reservation list during my visit.Upon entering, the atmosphere is warm and homey, with only counter seating available. The chef operates the restaurant solo.As it was my first visit, I ordered the chef's recommended lamb curry on the ▪️Roka Plate, and the limited cold salmon curry on the ▪️Puchi Curry. The rice is made from Akita Komachi from Ogata Village, and the meat comes from Sato Butcher Shop, showcasing the chef's commitment to quality ingredients. My order was served in about 15 minutes. It was truly a combination of Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) and curry, resulting in the Roka Plate! The lamb curry had a refreshing tang and spicy flavor that paired perfectly with the rice. The meat was tender, and I could feel a gentle sweat forming. The limited cold salmon curry is the first chilled curry of the year, featuring fresh fish for the first time in the menu. It includes vegetables like tomatoes, and is cold, refreshing, and spicy. The rich salmon added a delightful touch. It feels like a shame that it's only available for a week.I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and I could feel my circulation improving!During checkout, the chef personally greeted each customer. Even though the restaurant operates on a time-slot basis, I was amazed at how he managed to serve all the meals by himself while also keeping an eye on the customers. It reaffirmed my belief that delicious food and attentive service go hand in hand.It was a great meal! Less

The flavors of the eggplant and pork combined with the mackerel flakes created a perfect balance that was simply divine. It’s an unusual combination, yet so easy to enjoy.By the way, the water was so good that I asked, "What kind of water purifier do you use?" I learned that the previous restaurant had a maintenance company set it up, but this one was already in place after the move, and it seems to be high-performance. That must be why the turmeric rice had such clarity. As always, the genius-level curry was impressive. I’ll definitely be back. It was a great meal! Less

The plate features turmeric rice and a seasoned egg at the center, surrounded by braised pork, curry, takana (pickled mustard greens), assorted achaar, and salad. Let’s break it down by components. The spice curry is incredibly bold, with a vibrant aroma and a pleasant heat that hits you directly. On the other hand, the braised pork showcases a rich sweetness from the fat and a strong anise flavor, making it excellent on its own. Given the quality of this plate, priced in the low JPY 1000 range, it is indeed very reasonable and offers great value. However, I was quite disappointed with the condition of the fresh vegetables, particularly the sunny lettuce piled on top of the plate. Many of the leaf tips and torn edges had turned brown and wilted, losing their moisture completely. The essence of this dish is to mix everything together and enjoy the contrast of fresh textures, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat the vegetables in such a state, so I had to leave the salad untouched. This completely disrupted the balance of the dish. No matter how affordable the price is or how well the spices are blended, if the basic quality control in preparation and presentation is lacking, it undermines the trust in this restaurant as a renowned establishment. Having made the effort to visit with high expectations for the dish's overall quality, it felt like a real shame and resulted in a somewhat bitter dining experience. Less

It seems that the morning lineup filled up quickly due to the number of people that followed. Returning at the reservation time, I ordered the Roka Plate for JPY 1,200, with lamb curry. The Roka Plate consists of braised pork rice and one type of curry. If you imagine a typical braised pork rice, you might be surprised as it only has pork on top. Instead, the pork and curry blend together, creating a different dish altogether. In that sense, I felt a bit disappointed and wished I had chosen a combination. However, the quality of the curry was outstanding. While Japanese people may not be instinctively accustomed to strong spices, this curry struck a perfect balance between authentic spice and flavors that appeal to Japanese tastes. The fusion of the spices and the richness of the lamb was truly delicious.Although I had high expectations for this famous restaurant, the quality was undoubtedly impressive. The prices were also very reasonable, which I appreciated! Less

My companion ordered the signature Roka Plate.First, the limited curry stood out with its unique aroma and flavor from the fermented bamboo shoots. The sweetness of the beef brisket combined with the numbing sensation of Sichuan pepper created a stimulating yet well-balanced dish. It wasn't just about the spiciness; the depth from fermentation brought a different character with each bite.In contrast, the Chicken Curry offered a stable and delicious experience. The balance of spice aroma and chicken flavor was excellent, making it enjoyable to compare with the limited curry. The side dishes were also well thought out, and mixing them while eating created a variety of flavors, keeping it interesting until the end.I've been exploring various spice curries lately, but Roka is truly in a league of its own. It contained ground pork, green onions, and garlic chives, resembling dumpling filling. Whole Sichuan peppercorns were generously included, creating a fragrant aroma that filled my mouth and nose. Instead of numbness, it offered a refreshing scent. The familiarity of dumpling filling combined with this stimulating flavor made it irresistible. The black vinegar ginger achaar, which pairs well with it, also had plenty of Sichuan peppercorns. The rich aroma and acidity of the black vinegar enhanced the sweetness of the meat and rice, creating a harmonious experience. It’s astonishing how such diverse ingredients can come together to create a high level of unity and completeness.I was in a state of not being able to stop, like those shrimp chips that you can’t resist. My plate was empty in no time.To produce such a high-quality curry weekly as a limited offering is nothing short of a miracle, worthy of being called the goddess's craft. While my curry experience is limited, I can imagine how challenging this must be. It seems she studies food extensively, focusing on curry around the clock, and to create such miracles requires not only talent but also hard work and research.I wouldn’t call myself a devotee, but I definitely want to support this charming owner and her curry. Now that I’ve figured out the tricks, I think I can visit more easily next time. I’ll definitely come back if there’s another intriguing limited offering. Less
I had been wanting to visit this place ever since I saw the owner’s YouTube video on how to make Lu Rou Fan, which I tried to replicate and found delicious.I arrived around 9:30 AM, and it seemed that the sign-up had already started, as there were no other customers present, so it must have begun about 15 minutes earlier.I managed to secure the last time slot at 14:20. The other time slots were already fully booked, and if I had been a bit later, I would have missed out on this final slot, so I felt fortunate to get it.I returned about 5 minutes before my time and entered the restaurant. It appears that they allow 6 people per session, and customers are admitted in the order they signed up to place their orders.Among the group of customers, two seemed to be regulars or fans, eagerly chatting with the owner about their previous visits and what they had eaten, which made it hard for me to focus on my meal.Another customer kept asking the owner about changing their order and what certain dishes were, but the owner clearly seemed annoyed, almost angry, which made me wonder about their attitude towards customers. Overall, the noise made the atmosphere uncomfortable.I ordered the Roka Plate and Lamb Curry, but honestly, I wasn’t impressed. I felt it was lacking, and I wished I could have experienced more of the spice aromas. Perhaps it was because it was the last time slot, or maybe the uncomfortable atmosphere made it hard to enjoy the flavors. Either way, I left feeling disappointed with my first experience at Roka. I visited before a morning appointment in Shinjuku and made a note of my visit.I just finished work and had lunch here. The location can be quite hard to find, so it might confuse some people. The interior is filled with the wonderful aroma of spices, creating a great atmosphere. The flavor of the curry is perfectly spicy, with a tingling heat that’s hard to describe.I thought it would be easier to visit if they had a table check system for ordering.
On this day, I visited SPICY CURRY Roka in Okubo.Like the previous visit to Takeuchi, this place is among my top three must-try curry spots. Many people might know it for its collaboration menus with convenience stores and other restaurants. However, it’s quite challenging for regular office workers to visit since it’s closed on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (I heard they opened for a few days during the recent Golden Week). You need to arrive early in the morning or before evening to secure a spot, making it a Very Hard visit.I had a weekday off, so I made an effort to go and register early in the morning.I arrived around 9 AM on a weekday, although I wished I could have come a bit earlier, but there were train delays…(^^;)It’s just a little over a minute’s walk from Okubo Station. It’s also a reasonable distance to walk from Shinjuku Station. At the registration desk, it seems they have a time-based entry system with several groups. Unfortunately, the first group was already full.I had some errands to run, so I made a reservation for around noon.By the way, it seems that the 9 AM slots fill up quickly, so it’s better to arrive early.I arrived at the scheduled time. After a short wait, I was guided in according to the registration order.Once inside, the owner, Eri-tin, explained the menu. She looks like a complete blonde gal, but her explanations were very polite and easy to understand. The Roka Plate seems to be popular, combining curry with Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice). They also have the limited Nikaido Keema and Strong Lu Rou, plus a curry with Lamb Vindaloo. Each dish is prepared and served one at a time, and the wait wasn’t too long. The presentation of the curry was very appealing. With boiled eggs, vegetable salad, and achar, the colors were beautiful, and I could already sense the deliciousness. The Nikaido Keema had a strong flavor of Sichuan pepper. It was quite spicy but had a refreshing and robust taste.I had a similar keema recently, and it was really delicious. The amount of ground pork was impressive, and the addition of perilla leaves added an interesting twist that you don’t find in regular keema curry. The Lu Rou was thick slices of pork belly seasoned with star anise, which paired nicely with the rice. While there was some overlap with the pork in the keema, I love pork, so it was no problem at all! I would have appreciated a bit more quantity, though. The Lamb Vindaloo was somewhat spicy, just at the limit of what I could handle. The diced lamb had a strong presence, and the acidity was just right, making it quite impressive.I felt like I could have used a bit more rice, so if you order the mini curry, you might want to go for the large rice option. The curry was delicious, but the owner’s service was also very attentive and left a good impression.Even though it’s a one-person operation, the service was efficient, and the food was served promptly. That’s the advantage of a reservation system. This curry shop truly lived up to its reputation! The high difficulty of visiting is a drawback, but I definitely want to come back again! (^^) Less

Due to the aging of the building, she relocated to a nearby building owned by the same owner, opening on June 7, 2023. I visited the old location about 300 times in my life, but the move reset my Tabelog reviews. On this day, I lined up from the morning, started the reservation process, and wrote my name and my companion's name in Katakana for our desired time. Then, we left the restaurant and waited until that time. About 10 minutes before our reservation, we returned to wait, and Eri-tin called our names, leading us to the counter seats inside the restaurant. What I ordered this day was:Two selectable curries: Limited ROKA-style Beef Kashmiri Curry, Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise, and Clam Broth Curry for JPY 1,600 + Kyu-chan for JPY 200 + Petit Salad for JPY 200 + Lassi for JPY 400 (all prices include tax). The ROKA-style Beef Kashmiri Curry is described as:"Starting today, the ROKA-style Beef Kashmiri Curry is available! This curry is extremely spicy and detoxifying, featuring pressure-cooked beef combined with refreshing spices like coriander. During this rainy season when swelling is common, we’ve crafted a blend of spices to help circulate your body, so enjoy the refreshing feeling after eating!✨ [Limited item] Kyu-chan for JPY 200 is a pickled cucumber seasoned with ginger and mustard oil, perfectly complementing the Kashmiri curry! We can accommodate 1340-5 guests and 1420-5 guests remaining. With three hours until my turn, I went home and drove to Okubo.Starting today, July 8th (Wednesday), the latest limited edition "Taco-style Keema Curry" features a spicy blend of ground beef and pork with cumin, coriander seeds, and oregano, perfect for hot weather. It pairs well with rice, tortilla chips, and flour tortillas, allowing for enjoyable takeout variations. Also, I recommend the limited quantity "Edamame Salsa Achaar" for JPY 200. This achaar, made with edamame, tomatoes, onions, lime juice, olive oil, and oregano, pairs excellently with the limited curry!I ordered the "Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise and Shellfish Broth Curry" and the "Taco-style Keema Curry" as my two-choice curry (known as a combination), with a medium portion of rice, the limited "Edamame Salsa Achaar," and a soft-boiled egg with special extra spicy masala paste. As the 4th person in the 12:10 slot, I received my curry from Eri-tin at 12:23, and it looked beautiful and delicious! ⭐️On the left is the "Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise and Shellfish Broth Curry," and on the right is the "Taco-style Keema Curry." On top of the rice are the onion achaar, the limited edamame salsa achaar, a soft-boiled egg, and a salad in the back. The "Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise and Shellfish Broth Curry" has a gentle flavor of edamame combined with the delicate umami of shellfish broth, creating an elegant curry. I had no idea what to expect, but the moment it touched my palate, the umami exploded, offering a delicate vichyssoise soup curry taste that was incredibly delicious! ❣️ The accents of sumac, spearmint, and fragrant fried onions were spot on. This "Chilled Edamame Vichyssoise and Shellfish Broth Curry" is likely to be among my top 3-5 favorites of the year! The Taco-style Keema Curry is a spicy keema that showcases Roka's signature spice blend, with the umami of the ground beef and pork complemented by the acidity of chunky tomatoes and onions, making it incredibly tasty! ⭐️I added the special extra spicy masala paste to both curries, elevating the umami and spiciness levels by 2-3, and finished them off in no time. The edamame salsa achaar was also a gentle achaar that paired excellently with the curry rice.Initially, I thought the combination of vichyssoise and tacos gave a multicultural vibe reminiscent of the World Cup, but each curry has its own distinct character. Today was absolutely delicious! ✨ It was a great meal! Less

I've always admired the way the owner, Eri, uses spices, and this time was no exception; it was delicious. However, I think I've become less tolerant of spiciness over the years. The Devil curry, marked with four chili peppers, was quite spicy, and I struggled to fully enjoy the flavors. It was tasty, but the heat overshadowed it a bit. The Lanka-style chicken wing curry, marked with three chili peppers, was also fairly spicy, and by the end, I had a slight headache from the heat. From now on, I’ll stick to dishes with a maximum of three chili peppers here (crying). Less

I signed in at 9:30 and managed to get a reservation for the 1 PM slot. When going as a pair, make sure to register both names. The curry is absolutely delicious. I opted for a large serving of rice for an extra JPY 100. If you're a man, you might want to go for the large size. The manager was friendly and welcoming, which was great.
The nearest station is JR Okubo, just a 2-minute walk away.I had been craving this place for a while, so I visited with a friend. Arriving around 8:30 AM, I found about 15 people already in line, even though it was a gap during Golden Week. The line continued to grow, and shortly after 9 AM, the owner appeared to start the registration process. I successfully secured my desired time slot at 12:10 PM.A little before our reservation, my friend and I arrived in front of the restaurant, and we entered right on time. While looking at the menu, I was recommended the limited curry, so I ordered:- Roka Plate (JPY 1,250)- Lamb Curry (JPY 100)- Large Rice (JPY 100)- Petit Curry (JPY 500) Beef KormaMy friend ordered the Roka Plate (JPY 1,250) with Chicken Curry and a Lassi (JPY 400).As I waited, enjoying the owner’s meticulous service, our dishes were served in under 20 minutes. The Roka Plate features braised pork rice topped with curry, a signature style of Roka. The Lamb Curry, reminiscent of Vindaloo, had a mild acidity but an incredible depth of spices, perfectly complementing the rich flavor of the lamb. The limited Beef Korma was a rich dish with whole spices bursting with flavor, combining the savory taste of bone-in meat with the sweetness of vegetables. It was quite spicy, making me sweat, but it had an addictive taste that I absolutely loved.Mixing these curries with the braised pork and side dishes created a delightful harmony of sweetness, spices, and heat, making it impossible to stop eating.I finished everything quickly and cooled down with a lassi before leaving the restaurant.Once again, I was reminded that the title "Goddess of Spice Curry" is well-deserved.It was a great meal. On my first visit, I started with the "Roka Plate." Reservations begin at 9:30, but I stopped by around 10:30 on a whim and luckily found an opening, securing a spot for 13:40 (the restaurant accommodates up to six people per seating). Payments are cash only, and while take away is available, it seems to be quite competitive, indicating its popularity. The Roka Plate costs JPY 1,250, and I chose the classic chicken curry. The spice curry was so delicious that I can see why it could become addictive, making it feel like a great deal, which explains the many repeat customers. Regulars were greeted by name, adding to the homey atmosphere. The only downside was that being in the basement, I couldn't connect to Rakuten Mobile. Also, it seems they provide handwritten receipts instead of printed ones. It was a great meal! Less
This extremely popular restaurant, open only from Monday to Thursday, requires taking a day off work to visit. It was quite a challenge to finish it.All the other customers seemed to be regulars, casually enjoying this dish. Although I ordered level 4 spice, levels 5 and 6 sell out quickly. In a world where many curry restaurants cater to a milder palate, I’ve never heard of a place that serves such boldly spicy curry and is still popular. It didn’t seem like a gathering of spice enthusiasts. As many Tabelog users have commented, the owner, with their flashy appearance and excellent customer service, attracts a diverse crowd, regardless of gender, who seem unfazed by the heat. Less
I had been unable to visit SPICY CURRY Roka due to the challenges of making reservations while juggling motherhood. In the meantime, I had to settle for collaborations and supervised retort products from places like Ramen Kagetsu and Yoshinoya... But then, a miracle happened! (Truth be told, I just hadn’t finished my tasks from yesterday.)I lined up from 5 AM, and thanks to the current reservation system, I was able to visit after being called.... More

I was so glad to have worked early in the morning!! (Truth be told, I just hadn’t finished my tasks from yesterday.)I lined up from 5 AM, and thanks to the current reservation system, I was able to visit after being called. Thank you for the precious seat! (´;ω;`) I was so excited that I arrived way too early (lol), so I killed some time at a convenience store. When it was just five minutes before my reservation, everyone lined up in order. I confirmed the owner’s name and entered the restaurant. They took orders in the same order as the reservations, and then carefully prepared each curry one by one. Even with just one person working, the service was incredibly attentive!Since it was my first visit, I had decided I must try the Roka Plate, and I opted for the limited ROKA Butter Chicken Curry, along with the limited Red Grape Lassi.Butter Chicken Curry often has a sweet image, but while you can taste the sweetness of the vegetables, it also has a refreshing flavor. Mixing it with achar made it even more delicious. And when I bit into the chicken, I could taste the sweetness of the curry as well. I absolutely loved this adult-flavored curry!!The lassi was the richest I’ve ever had in my life. I loved it so much!! It was packed with things I adore ★The self-proclaimed single gourmet who brought me there had the limited Saba Keema, which looked so spicy with bright red chilies, and I could already smell the intense spices wafting from it ( º дº) Less
Due to the restaurant's operating days and hours, I usually can't visit "SPICY CURRY Roka," but since they were open during the holidays for Golden Week, I decided to take this rare opportunity to go.I was surprised to see on their social media account that they advised against lining up before 5 AM. Nevertheless, I took the first train and arrived in front of the restaurant at 5:50 AM. Nevertheless, I took the first train and arrived in front of the restaurant at 5:50 AM. Although they originally planned to start taking names at 9:30, they had already begun due to the large crowd. At that point, there were only 6 seats left, and I managed to squeeze into the last group at 14:20.With plenty of time until my designated slot, I headed to my own shop in Akihabara to work on a new curry recipe and do some cleaning. After having lunch at an Okinawan restaurant, I made my way to Okubo at 14:20.This was my first visit to "SPICY CURRY Roka" since their relocation, marking my first visit in 6 years. I used to be able to drop by casually, but now it has become a challenging restaurant to visit.Of course, I ordered the signature dish, the "Roka Plate," which allows you to enjoy both the braised pork (Lu Rou) and curry together. While I was intrigued by the limited-time "ROKA Butter Chicken Curry," I opted for the "Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry," which I hadn't tried yet among the classics. Additionally, I added the ultra-rare limited "Puchi Curry" as well. The "Roka Plate (Creamy Vegetable Korma)" was JPY 1,250, plus the "Super Spicy Mackerel Keema" for JPY 850.The Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry is said to be a "healing presence" at Roka. The rich gravy has a thick, stew-like texture, and while it's mild, the fragrant spices create a deep flavor. The eggplant absorbs the sauce, resulting in a tender finish, and the contrast in texture with the beans is interesting. Not only is it delicious on its own, but when mixed with the braised pork and side dishes, the korma's creamy richness elevates the overall dish. The added Super Spicy Mackerel Keema is very spicy, but it has a sharp heat that doesn't linger unpleasantly. The umami of the mackerel bursts forth, and naturally, I started sweating. To counter the spiciness, I ordered the Golden Week limited "Hiroshima Miyoshi Red Grape Lassi" for JPY 500. Its refined sweetness and acidity gently reset my heated palate.Having won the fierce competition for names on this holiday, I loosened my wallet a bit and made some luxurious orders. But since I don't know when I'll be able to come again, I think it's justified. By the way, I heard that the name-taking ended at 5:25 AM the next day during the holiday opening... quite terrifying. It was a great meal! Less
