Due to the restaurant's operating days and hours, I usually can't visit "SPICY CURRY Roka," but since they were open during the holidays for Golden Week, I decided to take this rare opportunity to go.I was surprised to see on their social media account that they advised against lining up before 5 AM. Nevertheless, I took the first train and arrived in front of the restaurant at 5:50 AM. Although they originally planned to start taking names at 9:30, they had already begun due to the large crowd. At that point, there were only 6 seats left, and I managed to squeeze into the last group at 14:20.With plenty of time until my designated slot, I headed to my own shop in Akihabara to work on a new curry recipe and do some cleaning. After having lunch at an Okinawan restaurant, I made my way to Okubo at 14:20.This was my first visit to "SPICY CURRY Roka" since their relocation, marking my first visit in 6 years. I used to be able to drop by casually, but now it has become a challenging restaurant to visit.Of course, I ordered the signature dish, the "Roka Plate," which allows you to enjoy both the braised pork (Lu Rou) and curry together. While I was intrigued by the limited-time "ROKA Butter Chicken Curry," I opted for the "Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry," which I hadn't tried yet among the classics. Additionally, I added the ultra-rare limited "Puchi Curry" as well. The "Roka Plate (Creamy Vegetable Korma)" was JPY 1,250, plus the "Super Spicy Mackerel Keema" for JPY 850.The Creamy Vegetable Korma Curry is said to be a "healing presence" at Roka. The rich gravy has a thick, stew-like texture, and while it's mild, the fragrant spices create a deep flavor. The eggplant absorbs the sauce, resulting in a tender finish, and the contrast in texture with the beans is interesting. Not only is it delicious on its own, but when mixed with the braised pork and side dishes, the korma's creamy richness elevates the overall dish. The added Super Spicy Mackerel Keema is very spicy, but it has a sharp heat that doesn't linger unpleasantly. The umami of the mackerel bursts forth, and naturally, I started sweating. To counter the spiciness, I ordered the Golden Week limited "Hiroshima Miyoshi Red Grape Lassi" for JPY 500. Its refined sweetness and acidity gently reset my heated palate.Having won the fierce competition for names on this holiday, I loosened my wallet a bit and made some luxurious orders. But since I don't know when I'll be able to come again, I think it's justified. By the way, I heard that the name-taking ended at 5:25 AM the next day during the holiday opening... quite terrifying. It was a great meal!
