New wood-cooked whole hog barbecue joint alert! The Honey Hog in Morganton, North Carolina, opened in July. Cooking locally-sourced whole hog plus brisket, ribs, chicken and more on a pair of offsets named Paw Paw and Nannie. (No, really.)

It's pretty darn big operation, too, complete with a full bar and two dining porches. The Piedmont of NC and Texas collide with red slaw and hushpuppies alongside chavos beans and jalapeño cream corn.

A visit to @bluehoundbarbecue, just across the NC line in Dillard, GA, has been on my to-do list for far too long, but no more! @pitmasterkylebryner is hard at work creating a distinctive Appalachian-style barbecue, and it starts with bang-up brisket and beef cheeks from just up the road at @brasstownbeef. The platters get a distinctive mountain spin with sides like Appalachian soup beans (delicious!), buttermilk slaw, and complementary chow chow.

They’re putting the smoke in the Smokey Mountains with some good real wood-cooking these days.

Finally made it up to Waynesville NC to check out @bensbackdraftbbq1. When he's not putting fires out, Ben's stoking them in a big @tmg_pits offset plus a direct heat hog cooker. Beefy, thick-sliced brisket is solid, but that chopped pork with a generous dose of sweet vinegar sauce is the star (esp. with a generous forkful of that tangy white slaw).

And that Moonpie banana puddin'!

On my way home from Atlanta yesterday, I took a little detour up north of Augusta to Evans, Georgia, to visit @smokeandbarrelsga. I was a little leery as I pulled into the rather new strip mall, but I peeked around the corner, spied a big wood pile and an actual cookhouse behind the building, and decided it was worth a shot.

I wasn’t disappointed. They have delicious tri-tip (perfectly medium rare, tender, with a smoky bark), and the turkey was quite good, too. The green beans swim in a rich bacon-laced broth, and the secret to what’s billed as “Brunswick stew” on the menu is that it’s basically hash and rice. Well worth the detour.

@broadstreetbbqatl is part of the new South Downtown development in Atlanta, close by the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena. No butcher paper-lined metal trays here for the thin-sliced brisket, neatly-trimmed ribs, nor the very eye-catching(and delicious) ATL ho cakes (not a typo) — each get their own plate. Meats cooked on reverse flow Langs in the pit cage adjoining the restaurant.

I'm on the record as being a big fan of barbecue in bars, and at Broad Street there’s a clever, follow-your-flavor cocktail tree. My tastes led me to the Brain Tonic, a very Atlanta twist on an old-fashioned with a base of bourbon and Coca-Cola syrup. Also, props for the big bowl of sweet bacon-braised collards — perfect piled atop the hoe cake with a few scraps of brisket and a dose of tangy brown sauce.

Took a short detour through downtown Augusta GA today, and Broad Street is all tore up, as they say. (Major construction.) Fortunately, @bradleysbbqaug is open for business, and it’s worth a visit.

Wonderful setting in an old downtown building with exposed brick and lots of historic Augusta touches. Ribs and pulled pork with Bradley’s original sauce, a spicy tomato-vinegar blend, plus a rather unique hash-and-rice (very tomato-ey and studded with chunks of potatoes) and super delicious slow-cooked green beans.
