I don’t dine out on New Years Eve, but the night before is a perfect time to go to Gary Danko. There are so many classics, I never know what to order (3 courses are $130): buckwheat bilini with smoked salmon and caviar, lobster salad, glazed oysters with caviar, steak tartare, pork tenderloin, roast lobster with chanterelles, and chocolate soufflé... We recently took a food-savvy friend to HK Lounge Bistro because the food never disappoints. From the shrimp toast to start to the custard tarts at the end every dish lures me back again and again!
No other restaurant does Christmas like Nancy Oakes at Boulevard! Every surface flickers, glows and sparkles. The three course menu ($128) is equally as impressive with truffles, caviar, and other ingredients that celebrate the season.
In the last 15 years I can’t recall ever having anything less than a perfect meal at Cotogna.
Sotto Mare encapsulates the old time spirit of North Beach with such dishes as sand dabs, oysters and bay shrimp salad.
I renewed my love for Kansas City – I lived there for eight years – when I went to Stateline Road Smokehouse in Napa, which celebrates chef Darryl Bell’s KC roots. The multi-course menu at Hilda and Jesse is a good deal at $98. You get several bites to start followed by such dishes as arrowhead cabbage with quince, black cod, a pork chop and chocolate lava cake.
I happened to be at A16 last night and ordered the meatballs. It brought back 20 year-old memories when the restaurant created a sensation by featuring “Meatball Mondays.” It was so popular the meatballs now have a permanent place on the menu.
San Francisco has always been known for its fine dining prowess. The newly opened Wolfsbane adds even more legitimacy to that assertion. Owners Rupert and Carrie Blease offer a 10 to 12 course tasting menu ($248) with five snacks to begin-including artichokes with sunflowers-and about as many to end. In between are such masterful dishes as chilled seafood... More
I enjoyed the best Peking Duck of my life at the Happy Crane. Unfortunately, they only prepare two a night and it has to be ordered in advance.
