I visited for lunch! This restaurant is located in Karatsu City, Saga, and it's quite popular, so reservations are a must. Lunch can cost over JPY 10,000, making it somewhat upscale, but the Saga beef steak grilled right in front of you is absolutely exquisite! The master has a bit of a quirky personality, but he was quite entertaining to talk to!
I visited for lunch on Obon and made a reservation online for the counter. I was with my parents in their 80s, and we all finished our meals with delight. We enjoyed delicious meat in various styles along with the chef's witty conversation. It was a wonderful way to wrap up our trip to Karatsu, and I was truly impressed by the taste of Saga beef! I would love to visit again on my next trip to Karatsu. This time, since I drove, I couldn't enjoy any alcohol, but next time, I definitely want to come... More

Since its establishment in 1979, this specialty restaurant has been dedicated to local flavors, serving A5 rank Saga beef prepared on a teppan grill. It has even earned a Michelin star in the "Michelin Guide Fukuoka & Saga 2014 Special Edition." With a Tabelog score of ★4.11 (as of September 2026), it ranks in the top 10 for "Steak" restaurants nationwide and holds the number one spot for "Teppan-yaki" in Japan. The restaurant has also won the Bronze Award at the Tabelog Awards in 2022, 2025, and 2026, which recognizes establishments with scores over ★4.0. Currently, the kitchen is led by Chef Akinori Kawakami, the founder's son. Born and raised in Karatsu, he initially aspired to be a French chef after graduating from a culinary school in Fukuoka and honed his skills at the Hotel Okura in Tokyo. However, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps. To develop his expertise in meat selection, he worked at a butcher shop and gained experience at "Saga Beef Ginza Kira" before becoming the second-generation owner-chef of Caravan in 2010. While honoring his predecessor's vision, he has transformed the restaurant into a new style, establishing it as a representative steakhouse not only for Saga but for all of Kyushu. The restaurant aims to create a homey atmosphere where first-time visitors feel like regulars. In addition to the chef's impressive culinary skills, his lively conversations filled with local pride and flamboyant flambe performances have become a hallmark of the dining experience. The menu consists solely of omakase courses, with no a la carte options. Each course includes a salad, three appetizers (grilled shabu, seared sushi, and teppan-seared dishes), a main steak, rice and soup to finish, and dessert. The prices range from JPY 12,000 to JPY 35,000, with the same number of dishes in each course, varying in meat quality and quantity based on the budget. Drinks can be ordered a la carte, but pairing courses (all you can drink) are available for JPY 3,000, JPY 5,000, and JPY 10,000, featuring beers, wines, and Japanese sake according to the budget. On this occasion, I reserved the JPY 16,000 Saga beef omakase course through Tabelog and chose the JPY 5,000 pairing course for drinks. The first dish was a crunchy salad. The restaurant's original dressing, created by the first owner who was not fond of vegetables, is based on a recipe made for his family, enhanced with local natural salt and onions, showcasing a commitment to natural flavors and health. It is also sold as a souvenir and is popular for online orders. Next, Saga beef made its appearance. The chef, who has experience in a butcher shop, personally selected the finely marbled and sweet A5 rank Saga beef. The three appetizers—grilled shabu, seared sushi, and teppan-seared dishes—are presented with variations in fat content, thickness, and cooking levels to gauge the customers' preferences and tolerances for fat, which informs the choice of steak cuts and cooking methods for the main course. The grilled shabu features a well-balanced cut of meat, while the seared sushi offers a rich, melt-in-your-mouth sweetness, and the teppan-seared dish boasts an even richer fat content and exceptional tenderness. When asked which appetizer I preferred, I mentioned the grilled shabu, and based on that, we discussed the cut and quantity of meat, ultimately deciding to share approximately 160g of Saga beef Chateaubriand (80g per person) and also ordered a Saga beef hamburger. The main steak is cooked slowly with low-temperature steam to retain its tenderness, followed by a quick flambe to sear the surface. It is served cut into bite-sized pieces on a hot plate, allowing diners to finish cooking it to their preferred doneness. The steak, with its crispy char and melt-in-your-mouth texture, is truly exquisite. The Saga beef hamburger, which the chef claims rivals the steak, is made with A5 rank Saga beef and Saga black-haired wagyu, combined with locally sourced onions, eggs, and salt, along with some wheat gluten for a fluffy texture that absorbs the meat juices. The meal concludes with white rice from Karatsu and onion soup. For dessert, we enjoyed a Catalana, which is a chilled custard cream topped with sugar and caramelized with a torch for a crispy finish. For an after-drink, I chose the most popular iced café latte. While the food was outstanding, it was the chef's captivating conversational skills that truly impressed. He engaged all the customers at the counter, sharing not only information about the meat but also local attractions, insider tips, and stories about anime and movies set in Karatsu, ensuring everyone had a great time. According to the chef, "delicious food" is just the starting point. He keenly observes customers' preferences and personalities, aiming for them to leave feeling that they had a wonderful experience. This, he believes, is the true value of dining out. He is indeed a culinary entertainer. Less
I had been wanting to visit this place from Fukuoka for a long time, but it took me two years to finally come here. The chef welcomes you like a good friend, which is a wonderful touch! The sweetness of the fat melts away! I enjoyed it with soy sauce or salt and wasabi.【Photo 3】 Saga Beef Aburi Sushi - ◎ The seared sushi delivered a more direct taste of the fat compared to the hot shabu! It pairs well with the acidity of the red vinegar rice!【Photo 4】 Saga Beef Teppan Aburi with Wasabi and Rock Salt - ○ Lightly heated on the teppan, this dish had an even stronger impression of fat! It was interesting to find wasabi and large grains of rock salt hidden inside! After this exploratory session, the chef determined the type, quantity, and doneness of the meat based on each guest's budget and preferences. For me, the chef decided on a cut that had both fat and lean meat, focusing on quality over quantity, which was exactly what I wanted! 【Photo 5-8】 Saga Beef Filet Steak - ☆ A flamboyant fire performance called "Evil Purification"! Dipped in a sauce made from sake, soy sauce, mirin, and wine, it was quickly grilled on the table teppan, resulting in a juicy and succulent steak! Incredibly delicious! The sesame sauce was also a great match!【Photo 9】 Saga Beef Marinated Aburi Rice Bowl - ○ The marinated Saga beef was placed on rice and then seared with a gas burner, giving the rice a slightly charred aroma, but it was fine once mixed. The seasoning of the marinade and the sweetness of the Saga beef fat were a winning combination!【Photo 10】 Onion Consommé Soup - ○ The consommé was simple and not too overpowering, with a lovely sweetness from the onions!【Photo 11-15】 Potatoes, King Oyster Mushrooms, Sweet Potatoes, Red Bell Peppers, Broccoli - ○ The vegetables from Karatsu were delicious! I particularly enjoyed the potatoes with salt!【Photo 16】 Special Hamburger (additional +JPY 2,000) - ◎ This hamburger was juicy and fluffy, yet it held in all the meat juices, making it delicious even without any condiments, served with rice!【Photo 17】 Crème Brûlée - ◎ The surface was caramelized with a gas burner just before serving. I was already full from the hamburger, but I had room for this!【Drinks】 Spicy Ginger Ale (JPY 400, tax included) 【Post-Meal Drink】 Iced Café Latte The milk at the bottom was fresh and delicious!I enjoyed a custom-made Saga beef course tailored to each guest's fat tolerance, along with a non-stop talk show by the chef!I believe some may find the chef's rapid-fire talk style appealing while others may not, so if you want to listen, sit at the counter; otherwise, there are table seats available. In any case, the chef makes an effort to cater to each guest, so even starting from opening time, the course can take nearly three hours to complete. If you're concerned about train schedules for your return, please take note. For those who enjoy alcohol, there seems to be a budget-friendly pairing option available, making it quite enjoyable. Although this genre is not something I usually go for, it turned out to be a very memorable night in Karatsu!PayPay was accepted for payment. Less
This restaurant was a delightful experience, especially with the quirky owner’s entertaining conversations at the counter. The quality of the meat and the prices are both excellent. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy rich, melt-in-your-mouth cuts. The Saga beef Chateaubriand was the most delicious I’ve ever had in my life.

It was a busy time with dishes being prepared one after another, but the chef and staff moved with impressive efficiency, ensuring everything ran smoothly even with a full house.I enjoyed the same Saga Beef Omakase Course and pairing as last time. Starting with three appetizers, they read the guests' preferences and reflected that in the choice of meat and cooking style, which is a unique approach of Caravan. I was thrilled to savor the delicious Saga Beef again during this trip to Karatsu, just as I remembered from my previous visit. Of course, the chef's engaging conversation and performance were wonderful as well.Returning to a restaurant I enjoyed during my travels is one of the joys of traveling. Once again, I felt that this was a time that made me want to say, "I would love to visit again when I come to Karatsu." Less
I used to make reservations by phone, but I really appreciate being able to book online now. When I made the reservation, I had already chosen a course, but the chef suggested the best options within my budget, allowing me to fully enjoy Saga beef. After that, I left everything to the chef and had a wonderful time.
Arriving in Karatsu on a weekday, I explored the town. It felt deserted—perhaps due to the typhoon. Since they offered an all-you-can-drink option, I decided to indulge.Dining alone usually means staring at my phone, but the owner's engaging conversation was captivating. He shared his philosophical view that deliciousness varies from person to person, while also inquiring about my favorite cuts of meat and preferred cooking levels. It made sense why Tabelog mentioned a dining time of two and a half hours. We started with seared Saga beef, which was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The owner initially seemed grumpy, but as the evening progressed, he became more relaxed and started to resemble Sato Jiro. As a bonus, I was treated to some shadow beef, and he even saw me off at the end of the night. I returned to my hotel at midnight, having enjoyed a rich and delightful evening in Karatsu. Less

There are countless reasons that make you want to visit on special occasions. This time, I sat at the counter. The aroma of Saga beef being carefully cooked on the teppan right in front of me heightened my sense of happiness. The steak here is not just rare and tender; the cooking technique brilliantly maximizes the inherent flavors and sweetness of the meat. By cooking it slowly at a low temperature and then searing it at high heat, they achieve a perfect balance of a crispy exterior and juicy interior. What impressed me the most was how they fine-tuned the doneness according to the diner's preferences. It was truly a custom-made steak. With every bite, the rich flavor of the meat burst forth, allowing me to fully appreciate the potential of Saga beef. The different expressions it showed with salt, sauce, and condiments were delightful, keeping my interest until the very end. Moreover, the vegetables and side dishes were equally delicious.
