If you’ve been watching Houston’s sushi scene, you already know the team behind Neo and Kira doesn’t play around. Their newest concept, Oru, is one of the buzziest new sushi restaurants in Houston right now.

Located in its own standalone brick and mortar in The Heights, this intimate 24-seat sushi bar is upscale and design-forward. Where Neo focuses on omakase and Kira is all about hand rolls, Oru feels like a polished sushi bar with izakaya-style small plates, plus the option for omakase if you want to go all in.

I ordered à la carte and started with a Tuna tartare over crispy rice, Wagyu lumpia, Chawanmushi, Mini donburi.

For sushi, we went from delicate white fish to uni from New England and mackerel (served as a mini-style handroll; solid choice).

Hot dishes included a flavorful miso Cornish hen with broth (a standout) and an okoje toasted rice porridge that didn’t do it for me (skip it).

Don’t skip dessert, though. The mini taiyaki set was easily a highlight.

Overall: a beautiful, museum-quality space with refined plating and tiny portions — so order accordingly. If you’re a fan of Neo or Kira, this one’s worth adding to your Houston sushi rotation.

A far cry from a packet of crisps and a glass of red lemonade. This is what an “adult happy meal” looks like when it’s taken up a notch.

This is the kind of place that suits a Friday, post-work catch-up. Low lights. Proper glassware. No rushing.

@trillburgers teamed up again with @crawfishandnoodles for Trill Boil Part Two, bringing together smashburgers and Viet-Cajun seafood in one high-energy pop-up last night.

I first tasted Chef Hyun Kim’s mandoo at @hifoodwinefest, and it stayed with me enough that I made a point to visit O’Kims Korean Kitchen when I was in Chinatown.

Chef Hyun was extremely kind and generous with her time, and that sense of welcome carries through the restaurant. Korean traditions sit at the core of the menu, with island influences woven in to keep everything feeling easy and approachable.

@okims_honolulu fits so naturally into the neighborhood. It’s the kind of place you’re happy to walk into, linger, and support. If you’re nearby, go say hello and grab a bite!

Just in time for the upcoming Chinese New Year, @byantidote.ny is offering a limited time menu in addition to their standard offerings! It made it that much harder to pick what to order, but every single dish was packed with flavor and they didn’t hold back on the spice. Super impressed with the range of traditional dishes, in addition to the modern takes that still pay homage to the classics!

Unique , soulful meal at the utterly surprising and beguiling Chiune .

The majority of the dishes are white . They are minimalist with rarely more than 4 ingredients . They skew French but are clearly Japanese . It’s one of the most distinctive styles of dining I have ever seen .
Simple , sophisticated , unapologetic and elegant .

Fugu shirako soup - the ingredient is on every menu in Japan at this time , here it is turned into an introductory veloute .

White asparagus mifen - could also be construed as a remoulade , not sure how but this simple sliced vegetable seemed incredibly elevated .

Lily bulb risotto - candy sweet lily bulbs on a congee style rice .

Steamed daikon , chicken and ham broth - salted only on one corner , you are instructed to eat the turnip from left to right , once you reach the salted side it appears like a crescendo .

Chorizo , cdp , eggplant sauce - chunky sausage , slivers of mushroom, deep eggplant flavour sauce .

Kimoto consommé

Aori Ika , fruit tomato and snow crab - favorite dish , steak like pick of Ika , crunchy and dense , gorgeous sweet and salty fruit tomato and crab condiment .

Shitake , potato purée , egg yolk - signature dish using potatoes aged for 2 years then puréed with only milk and olive oil , tree grown Shitake and a perfect yolk .

Wild suffocated duck , nameko mushroom and duck jus - gamy duck , full of flavour , light jus .

Shizuoka black pork - marinated for 10 days in fruit enzymes .

Yumen, scallop and leek - cold somen , scallop mimicking fish cake , leeks , veering towards Chinese style .
