My breakfast sandwich obsession continues, this time at the new-ish @animalesbarbequeco. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a big-deal example of a food truck matriculating to a brick-and-mortar operation, so having this impressive setup materialize in our city is throwing off major “worth-the-wait” vibes. Ditto the spectacular breakfast sandwich. First things first: If there’s a better ham to be found in the Twin Cities, I haven’t encountered it, but it makes total sense that pork would be the front-and-center attribute of a barbecue joint’s breakfast sandwich, right? I’m so glad to see that chef/owner @jonwipfli has stamped the “Dr. Jon’s” name onto this ham, because his doctorate-level skills in the curing and smoking departments deserve top billing. And talk about a pile-on! The portion size is enough to outfit a smallish Easter dinner, in a good way, and it’s sliced so entrancingly thin that Hobart must be placing a “sheer” setting on its meat slicers. I’m also completely hooked on the soufflé-style egg, a baked marvel that is so delicately ethereal that I seriously wondered if molecular gastronomist José Andrés was working the brunch service. All other components are first-rate. The bun is a sterling example of the milk bun genre, rich and delicate and gently toasted. There’s just enough gooey Swiss cheese to make its presence known, and the sole condiment is a barely sweet and nicely punchy maple-mustard sauce. All of this goodness (if this isn’t Breakfast Sandwich Hall of Fame material, what is?) goes for $15.60, which is $13 with a tacked-on 20 percent service fee. Worth every penny, and then some. walked out like… that’s it?!

@pst.singapore has been on my list since they opened last june. globally hyped, consistently ranked on the 50 top pizzas in the world list, with a cult following in tokyo… and yet.

the apps? tragic. sour lasagna. sad meatballs. chewy octopus. oily broccoli.

the pizzas were the saving grace, thank god. solid overall, but nothing i’d rush back for. their crusts are intentionally extra charred for a smoky hit, which i did enjoy. they also sprinkle okinawan salt into the oven before baking for extra umami.

but the pies ran a bit too wet so the ratios felt off, and one was straight-up salty (the romana, so skip that). ps: you can ask for less char if that’s not your thing.

best three pies we tried:
– signature tamaki (with datterini tomatoes that you’re meant to smush all over… except one slice was missing its tomato 😅)
– arrabiata with their housemade nduja
– 5 formaggi with honey drizzle

still want to try the tokyo original, but in sg… @beyondthedough_pizza > @pst.singapore for tokyo-neopolitan style, no contest.

If you haven’t wandered through Old Town Monrovia lately… do it. Cute shops, twinkle lights, and then dinner @filletsushi
We started with the Rock Shrimp Tempura (crispy, lemony, spicy mayo perfection), Japanese fried jidori chicken (SO juicy), and the crispy rice spicy bluefin tuna that I could honestly order twice and not regret it.
But listen… you MUST get these rolls:
The Velvet Toro is next level — layers of bluefin, yuzu truffle soy, arugula, pecorino… it’s rich in the best way.
The White Roll is so fresh and bright with yellowtail + halibut and that little crunch on top.
And the Fire Albacore Roll? Smoky, garlicky, a little spicy… total fire 🔥😉
For our main we shared the Koji Miso Salmon and it was perfectly tender with that savory-sweet miso flavor that melts in your mouth.
And because no date night is complete without something sweet… the Nutella Croissant Pudding sealed the deal. Warm, gooey, chocolatey comfort that makes you sit there a little longer and not rush the night.

Mention the name @restaurantmastard, and everyone who cares about food in Montreal insists you dine at the little gem opened five years ago by chef Simon Mathys.

The chef’s menu, which revolves around prime ingredients from Quebec, is spare. Each of the give courses is described in just a few words. “I like things short and straightforward,” says Mathys, who nevertheless lists the names of everyone who works for him on a separate card. “This is not a one-man show.”

The team effort reveals itself in the details at Mastard, where the men and women who introduce the dishes include the people who made them. A recent dinner launched with a clear ham broth infused with toasted hay, as restorative a taste as any this season and the chef’s idea of a big hug.

No plate was less than memorable, although this fish fan fell especially hard for shaved, steamed beet hiding a pristine scallop on horseradish cream, and roasted walleye sauced with pork broth, miso and cream dappled with parsley oil. “Sauces are my favorite thing to do,” says the chef, who finishes the walleye with spoonfuls of basil, zucchini and eggplant purees.

San Francisco has no shortage of great food, but walking into Molinari Delicatessen feels different.

Yes, it’s picturesque and romantic, tucked into the Italian neighborhood like a postcard. But beyond the charm, the ingredients are familiar: bread, cured meats, cheeses, vegetables.

So why is this place special?

Repetition.
Revolutions.

They’ve been doing this since 1876.

Watching these guys work is like an orchestrated dance — charcuterie specialists moving in rhythm with prosciutto, mortadella, crusty bread, and muscle memory built over generations.

The final product is majestic. Not because it’s flashy — but because it’s perfected.

The only downside? The standard is forever lifted.

I live in a young city that desperately needs this level of craftsmanship and commitment. I only hope to live to see the day something like this exists back home.

If you’ve been watching Houston’s sushi scene, you already know the team behind Neo and Kira doesn’t play around. Their newest concept, Oru, is one of the buzziest new sushi restaurants in Houston right now.

Located in its own standalone brick and mortar in The Heights, this intimate 24-seat sushi bar is upscale and design-forward. Where Neo focuses on omakase and Kira is all about hand rolls, Oru feels like a polished sushi bar with izakaya-style small plates, plus the option for omakase if you want to go all in.

I ordered à la carte and started with a Tuna tartare over crispy rice, Wagyu lumpia, Chawanmushi, Mini donburi.

For sushi, we went from delicate white fish to uni from New England and mackerel (served as a mini-style handroll; solid choice).

Hot dishes included a flavorful miso Cornish hen with broth (a standout) and an okoje toasted rice porridge that didn’t do it for me (skip it).

Don’t skip dessert, though. The mini taiyaki set was easily a highlight.

Overall: a beautiful, museum-quality space with refined plating and tiny portions — so order accordingly. If you’re a fan of Neo or Kira, this one’s worth adding to your Houston sushi rotation.
