Lunch at @edo.izakaya

Tucked into the heart of East London, EDO is a spot that balances modern Japanese flair with warm hospitality. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with slick interiors and a relaxed yet elevated vibe—it’s the kind of place that feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard. The menu is a well-curated mix of izakaya-style small plates and elevated mains. Highlights? The beef tataki was delicate and punchy, with a yuzu kick that danced on the tongue. All the sushi was super fresh and very well made. Delicious crispy tempura prawns a must order. Service was slick—attentive without hovering, with staff who actually know their menu and aren’t afraid to make recommendations. Cocktails were sharp too—their take on a shiitake negroni was dangerously easy to drink.

Whether you're there for a date, a low-key celebration, or just want to eat somewhere that knows what it's doing, EDO is a solid shout. Pricey? A little. Worth it? Definitely

A place we didn’t plan for but ended up at — and it was incredible. We walked in and got lucky in snagging the high-top table by the bar, and so began our phenomenal journey through the menu at @inbetweendays.co. Everything was fantastic, but we both agreed the Brûléed Pork Belly and Salmon with Vietnamese Caramel and Crispy Rice were the standout dishes for us.

I went to Farzi Cafe, on Haymarket, for lunch with one of my oldest friends, Jim. We worked together for years, in London and Hong Kong, and both particularly love Indian cuisine. Farzi is part of an international group that serves modern and accessible dishes in a brightly lit contemporary environment. Let's face it: Indian cuisine has a bit of a reputational problem among diners who associate it with heavy sauces and challenging spice levels. All nonsense, of course, as long as you stay away from unevolved balti houses. It's a varied cuisine made with fresh herbs and spices;. There are multiple vegetarian and fish dishes, and plenty of other things in line with modern dining, including simple grills and family-style sharing. We had fun at Farzi, and Jim was happy with my choice of restaurant. We tried a variety of dishes @farzilondon, including (if I remember correctly) Fryums & Pappadums (£5.5); Spicy Edamame (£7); Winter Beetroot & Chhena Kofta (£18); Chicken Railway Curry (£20); 4 Cheese & Wild Mushroom Kebab (£10); chicken dumplings (£11); Angara Paneer Shaslik (£14); and Butter Chicken Bao (£11). The dishes are colourful and, I'd say, created with youthful diners in mind. They are Instagrammable -- our old friend dry ice made an appearance at one point -- and not over-complex, with a hint of sweetness.
