The black pearl tasting menu at the 8 , is a perfect excuse to tackle the Grand Lisboa wine list and today’s winner was yet another great value Mersault .

The seafood focused menu was a perfect match and the highlight may well have been the appetiser combination of chilled Snow crab with cherry tomato and honey glazed BBQ pork . The sweetness of the crab absolutely popped and the caramelised char siu further built on that flavour profile , postscript was I was utterly salivating .

First bite is the signature Cristal blue shrimp dumpling in goldfish shaped have had this close to ten times now and putting aside the goldfish shape gimmick , this is an excellent Har Gao .

Double boiled soup with sea whelk , abalone and silky fowl was super clean and pristine . Each protein element was insanely tender as well which is rarely the case with this type of soup .

Steamed garoupa fillet is one of my favourite dishes here . A handsome tranche of fish paired with black bean and garlic , ginger .

A lobster and chicken broth infused with Sichuan spices is the final savory course , with mushrooms , lobster meat and vermicelli noodles , it is a satisfying finale .

Dessert was a structurally intact double boiled pear with parachute resin and birds nest , not overly sweet , this still matched well with the last of the wine . Less

Sanwa directly translates into harmony between three elements, representing the synergy between producers, chefs and customers.

The tasting menu started off with a handful of cold and hot appetizers, including a satisfying prosciutto & gnocco fritto and a flavor-packed white asparagus with truffle scramble eggs.

The primi and secondi sessions were both designed in an unconventional manner. For primi, 2 pasta courses were included in okonomi style, with roughly 8-10 options for add-ons. Similarly, patrons could choose 1 meat course as part of the tasting menu, and add-on desired proteins at additional cost. If you are a big eater and planning to try all items on the menu, do expect to spend 4-5 hours at the restaurant.

Overall, the food was delicious, rich and creative. The format of the tasting menu also allows me to tailor the experience and pick the best dishes that suit my palate. Reservation is essentially limited to regular customers, and you are suggested to plan your visit 6 months in advance.

Tabelog 4.53 🥈

Takiya is a culinary experience where tempura and washoku come together. The omakase at this legendary tempura restaurant is driven by unconventional netas, premium condiments and aesthetic plating, alternating between top-quality seafood, signature yet unorthodox meat tempura and seasonal vegetables. Honoring his kaiseki training background, Chef Tatsuaki paid considerable effort in curating a delicious and visually pleasing hassun as the first course which is extremely rare in a tempura restaurant.

The tempura session began with a few quintessential tempuras such as kuruma ebi, kisu and my favorite earthy maitake. It was followed by a thick piece of tachiuo which is getting more and more popular among high-ended tempura restaurants, thanks to its flaky & moist texture and explosive flavors. Next up, Chef Tatsuiaki presented a duo of ayu that was plated in a way that resembles its swimming posture. Kinmedai and homemade uni & nori sauce was served next. It was easily one of the most creative yet carefully-contemplated tempura course, allowing patrons to savor the fish filet gracefully. The signature shiso-wrapped chateaubriand with truffle salt was ingenious – the crispy batter, herbal flavor, flavorsome & succulent steak worked extremely well together. Let’s not forget the showstopping seasonal anago & hanasansho tendon, hands down my favorite tendon I have ever tried in my life!

Takiya is absolutely my favorite tempura restaurant in Tokyo. They are also planning to open a branch in Shanghai. Reservation is limited to regular customers, and you should plan your visit at least 6 months in advance.
