I was invited to a precious seat and visited my favorite Sushi Oohata. As always, the appetizers were outstanding, but the highlight of this season is the sweetfish nigiri. I had heard it was wonderful, but the deliciousness is something you can only understand by tasting it, with so much hidden craftsmanship involved. The tuna was from August, which is typically not a good season for it, yet it exceeded all expectations in flavor.I definitely want to come back again! It was a great meal.

This sushi restaurant is already famous in Osaka! With only six seats, it offers a unique and intimate space! Foodies are all saying they want to try the chef's sushi! The rice is firm, with six different types of sushi rice. The rice changes depending on the toppings and the fat content of seasonal fish. What an eccentric chef! A lifelong culinary artist! On this day, I enjoyed fresh baby fish and squid, and I was completely satisfied! No wonder this place is so popular! Once you visit,... More

It's been a year and a half since my last visit! I was so excited that I arrived all sweaty. When it comes to sushi in Shinchi, Sushi Oohata is my only choice! Since I can't visit often, I have to make the most of it, but I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I also love the rice balls they offer as souvenirs.

Course?1 Bottle of Beer6 Chilled SakeTotal: JPY 38,200Located a 6-minute walk from Kitashinchi Station, this sushi restaurant is on the second floor of a building. I was invited by a regular customer for my first visit.Starting with "Tuna Somen," there were 3 dishes plus a platter before the nigiri. The platter included steamed abalone that was cooked for 6.5 hours, female shrimp, and firefly squid. The nigiri began with "Kisu" and included 12 pieces in total. The rice, made with red vinegar, had a... More

No matter how many times I visit, I always want to come back to "Sushi Oohata."This hidden gem in Kitashinchi is a renowned establishment for "Naniwa Edomae Sushi," pursued by Chef Ohata. With a Tabelog Bronze award for 10 consecutive years, it features only 7 counter seats and operates on a reservation-only basis. Once again, each piece of sushi showcased the chef's craftsmanship, making for a highly satisfying evening. Here are my impressions of each dish:【Hamo with Sudachi Miso (served with... More

This hidden gem in a back alley of Kitashinchi exudes luxury while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere from the moment you step inside. With only six seats at the counter, it feels indulgent to enjoy your meal while watching the chef's skilled craftsmanship right in front of you. The seasonal ingredients are exceptional, especially the rich sweetness of the medium fatty tuna, the intense flavor of the sea urchin, and the fluffy texture of the simmered eel, which are truly impressive. The rice, seasoned... More

I used this place for a date.It has the classic atmosphere of a traditional sushi restaurant.I used to dislike kohada (gizzard shad), but I ended up loving it here. In a word, it was delicious. The conversation with the chef was just the right balance—neither too close nor too distant. His timing in the conversation helped create a relaxed atmosphere, making it a great spot for both business meetings and dates.Above all, the cost performance is excellent. While many courses exceed JPY 20,000 per... More

In June 2026, I visited Sushi Oohata.I started with green tea.Next was a small rice bowl featuring Chiba's dragon mackerel. Then, I had the lightly seared belly of biwa trout.Followed by hamo (pike eel) with tomato somen, which also included some plum paste.I enjoyed octopus, grilled eel, stuffed Man-ginji peppers, miso-marinated takabe, and steamed abalone. The steamed abalone was exceptional, rich in minerals, making me feel like I was tasting the sea.Next was the squid. Then, I had the brand-name... I visited with a friend."Sushi Oohata" is a restaurant where you can enjoy carefully crafted Edomae sushi in a calm atmosphere. The freshness of the ingredients is exceptional, and the balance with the rice is perfect, allowing you to appreciate the chef's dedication with each piece. The seasonal fish nigiri, in particular, offers a delightful experience in both aroma and texture, providing a high level of satisfaction. The service is also pleasant, making it a recommended sushi spot for special... More

July at Sushi OohataThis month, the early summer delicacy, ‘Ayu’ sushi, has arrived. The sophisticated interior is filled with the delightful aroma of vinegared rice, creating an exquisite atmosphere. ✨Continuing to evolve, this Kansai-style Edomae sushi uses different types of rice to match each topping. The dishes are available as a course only, but additional items can be ordered. ☝️■ Grilled Conger Eel with Yuzu MisoTender and delicious conger eel paired with the gentle acidity of the... The meal ends with traditional preparations of kanpyo and tamago, although the portion sizes are still pretty beastmode. I forget if the kanpyo is an add-on since every single person at the counter always orders it (AGK = "always get kanpyo"). It is really good! There is also a small dessert of fruit that comes after. Nobody is leaving here hungry.

The ending sequence at Oohata is kind of like the six minute guitar solo in Freebird, it just keeps coming at you hard. After that donburi is an anago unlike any other I've tried. It is huge and super sweet - both from the marination and the tsume which is caramelized and carries almost a molasses-like flavor. These flavors are firmly in Kansai territory.

on 16 Jan 2026

Uni here seems to always be served in donburi format, in very generous portions, almost double what you might expect in a sushi course. The varieties are seasonal - upper left is bafun and murasaki sea urchins whereas the right side includes aka uni and "untreated" murasaki.

The tsumami reflect seasonal ingredients. But they are total flavor bombs. Even from pictures it is obvious that these aren't dainty slices of fish and vegetables. This collage represents a variety of some items I enjoyed over the last few years, over a few different seasons. From left to right, top to bottom:
1. Chunks of ankimo in a sweet tsume thickened with kuzu starch
2. Wara-smoked modori katsuo with a sticky mix of grated daikon, chives and ginger
3. A soup with hamo, matsutake and mizunasu... More
