My last night in Tbilisi.
A quiet neighbourhood with the charm of a bygone era, nestled on a hillside; an old building, candles on the stairs, first floor. The door opens. Chef @tekunia, from @littera_restaurant, welcomes us into her beautifully decorated flat with high ceilings.
A first room, where music plays softly, doors opening onto a superbly equipped kitchen, and to the right, the dining room, a central table with lit candles and small vases of flowers, a round pendant light on the ceiling, wine fridges lined up on the left.
We start with the Pkhali, bread and a paste of the spicy adjika which I love.
Next comes a sea bass tartare (usually it’s catfish, she tells us), with fresh coriander and a lime sauce, almost like a ceviche. Fresh, very good.
The ever-present chacha is already on the table and my shot is gone.
It’s so pleasant here, I think to myself. One can be made to feel welcome in a restaurant, but there’s always a different level of intimacy and informality when someone welcomes you into their own home.
We’re still only just getting started, and already several toasts have been made. That’s just how Georgians are. The next two dishes are particularly noteworthy.
Artichokes with a velvety Bazhe sauce containing walnuts, spices (including adjika :)) and vinegar. I loved it.
And a Georgian Tolma, with minced duck, rice and spices, wrapped in vine leaves and served with a foam of matsoni (fermented milk, almost like yoghurt) and mint.
Several good qvevri wines and toasts later, a wheat risotto with quail and local truffles, a dessert with feijoa, plus a final shot of Chacha, and I vaguely recall that we may have danced to the tune of ‘Mack the Knife’ at the end.
I took a long walk back to the hotel, on my own, so that I could soak up a little more of all that this city has to reveal.

My breakfast sandwich obsession continues, this time with a return visit to @heathersmpls. Do you ever encounter an item that’s making a brief appearance but you hope it earns a berth on the daily menu? That’s the case with the basil pesto breakfast sandwich that Heather Asbury and her crew were cranking out this weekend. All the components worked — and then some — starting with a sturdy white sourdough sandwich loaf that responded really well to the buttered-and-grilled treatment. The lively pesto seemed to be heralding spring’s imminent arrival, and the presence of prosciutto, Muenster and onion gave the proceedings some heft, flavor-wise. All kinds of gratitude for using the oven to boost the qualities of out-of-season tomatoes. And the scrambled eggs were perfection; seriously, when I attempted them at home, I channel the talents of the kitchen pros at Heather’s. Also, I thank them for serving a side salad that skips greens that were harvested, washed and bagged a week ago in California and instead features lettuces that have crunch, flavor and life; you are role models for garde-mangers everywhere. The $18 price seemed to be a reflection of its this-could-easily-serve-two portion size. Heather’s just celebrated its sixth birthday (and here's to many, many, many more). Morning baking. Headed down to the MN Bars Bake Sale at @grazenorthloop in the North Loop. From noon to 2 p.m. (and lots of other fun from 2-4) you can pick up bars (pronounced buh-arzz in Minnesota-speak) from nearly 50 Twin Cities bakers, including yours truly. third time back here + each time i rmbr why. food rocks, they’re always serving up something new + service is amazing. chef @haran__kumar = consistently brilliant 💯

they moved from tiong bahru to kampong bugis last year (taking over the old lucali + kilo kitchen space) + this was my first visit to the new digs.

quick tip: it gets warm in thurrr so dress light + the acoustics are funky so smaller groups are best for actually chatting.

Like I’ve said, been getting to my native South Jersey a lot more in recent years, I hate wasting a meal and it’s all about South Jersey and Philly phood phirst and phoremost. For a guy living in GA, I’ve had my share of Best of South Jersey and Philly cheesesteaks and more. @ryandhowies is Reading Terminal quality.

Perhaps my fave South Jersey influencer @dinewithdom_ has been and I missed (if not, go), but no question ALL who love food indigenous to the Delaware Valley must go here. I’ve had close to a dozen sandwiches, including repeats of course, and their cheesesteak, roast pork, and chicken cheesesteaks belong on every list of Best of SJ/Philly. The old world and traditional Italian hoagies are excellent too.

I’ve only been to the original in Medford, but they opened another location in Glassboro. It’s a good time to be a Rowan student, I guess. It’s run, don’t walk worthy. Less
