@margadh_rha’s new Sunday Lunch menu may read like the stuff of costume-drama state dinners and bodice-ripper banquets but it is also very 2026 and one of the most exciting Sunday lunch options we’ve seen on a menu in recent years, with @cathal_leonard, formerly of Potager in Skerries, now leading the kitchen.

Ramen is a dish engineered for solitude, which is why I went to @shiogensui_dxb alone. And not in a tragic, “man abandoned by society and the Serb” way, but simply because ramen does not tolerate the social diner.

It has no patience for anecdotes, social preambles, or people who say, “Let’s wait until everyone’s food arrives.” As soon as that bowl hits the pass, the ramen is already dying. The noodles are softening faster than a Spinney’s avocado. The broth is cooling. The egg is sitting there like a small golden accusation. Every second spent in conversation is an act of culinary vandalism.

“Table for one?” Ai asked, as I stepped into Shio Gensui, the Osaka import that’s just landed in Dubai.
“Yes.” I said, happily. I meant it.

And so, I sat alone at the counter, faced forward, and entered the private domain of a good bowl of shoyu ramen. I stopped talking, put on my Spotify ramen play list and grabbed my chopsticks.

Sometimes sharing is not caring. No performative ‘have the last gyoza’ democratic bullsh*^t. Sometimes it’s OK to be selfish. To want something all to yourself. A ramen is there to support that state of mind. And a ramen needs no supporting acts itself - it is the ultimate complete meal - nutritionally, emotionally, self-sufficiency in a bowl. My bowl.

But here’s where the democracy does come in - with ramen, you need know nothing. No Tampopo level of analysis. There is no need to forensically analyse the fat to salt content of the tare or check the hydration levels of the noodles (sorry @astoryoffood !) or the horoscope of the menma.

A good ramen is a good ramen. It only needs to impress you.

And Shio Gensui’s ramen certainly impressed me.

I dunno if this has ever happened to you, but I went into a vintage store today to get a new pair of jeans, and I must have tried on eight different pairs before I realized nothing in the store was going to fit me. I left the place so frustrated that I decided to go to a barre class that evening. Which was great, but when I was leaving, a woman on the street asked me if I was having a girl. 😭 My barre studio is in Long Island City and after a workout, I always want some form of Chinese food that I can claim is healthy. So I stepped into @huponyc for some dry pot, and holy mother of everything that is good … This was the finest dry pot I’ve ever eaten in my life. The fish was so delicate, the mala flavor so dialed in. I know that dry pot is oily but I ordered it without rice. As a professional and passionate eater, I just have such a difficult time managing my weight. And I have no idea if this helped or not, but damn, did it freaking taste good. Less

🥥🍹🍻🍛🍖Had the nicest dinner @simpangasia #palms and everything was so good got a few of our favs and tried somethings that quickly became our new favs 😉😍
Started with drinks — the Es Cendol (our favorite, so refreshing) + a beer 🍺
Roti Paratha (flaky, buttery, dipped in curry… sooo good) Martabak Telor new for us and I can’t believe we never had it before (savory, crispy, that sweet chili sauce 👌)
We shared everything (best way to do it): Char Kway Teow — smoky noodles with all the good stuff Nasi Goreng Jawa — a little spicy, super comforting Kalio Chicken Curry + coconut rice — rich, flavorful, honestly could eat this again right now.
And our go to The #8 Nasi Bungkus
Tradition in one wrap. Chicken curry, beef rendang, sambal egg, vegetable curry, and rice wrapped in banana leaves 🤤 a must get !!
Ended with both desserts because we had to: Martabak Manis — sweet pancakes chocolate & nutty & Black Rice Pudding — warm, creamy, and my favorite of the two

The first time I went to Maria Isabel, I ordered the tasting menu and vowed I would come back for the à la carte menu I’m glad I did! Laura Ozyilmaz puts her spin on many dishes including guacamole with caviar, asparagus salad, crab sandwich in a chile arbol sauce, chicken Milanesa, duck enchiladas with mole, and desserts that include a masa waffle taco with corn ice cream.
