I got the chicken shawarma platter with fries when I visited them for lunch the other day.
Chicken was very flavorful but it tasted more Desi spices than Mediterranean..
Fries were solid 🔥

My breakfast sandwich obsession continues, this time at the still-popular-after-all-these-years @gooddaycafemn. “Iggy’s Fried Egg Sandwich” has been on the menu since the place opened eighteen (!) years ago. That has to make it one of the first in the LBSU (Local Breakfast Sandwich Universe) to have captured my attention. I looked up my 2007 review of the restaurant in the @startribune (thanks, @newspaperscom), and I’m relieved to learn that I’d noted that this excellent sandwich “will permanently erase any Egg McMuffin thoughts.” That observation still rings true. It doesn’t appear that the formula has changed during the intervening 18 years; that’s pretty much the definition of a classic, right? All the components work together, really well: shaved ham, Cheddar, caramelized onions, two fried eggs handled with extreme care (slightly crisped whites, runny-as-all-get-out yolks) and lots of avocado, all layered between two pieces of lavishly buttered brioche that’s been toasted on the stove to a golden brown. Ok, there’s one misstep: the appearance of frustratingly flavorless, juiceless tomatoes. Even their weak-ish color seems off. Why bother? Another reason for admiration is the way-generous portion size, which falls firmly in the “feeds two” range, and full points for the similarly hefty pile of oven-roasted potatoes. I spent $14 on trendy pani puri last weekend and was reminded of this video I made last year that I never got around to sharing here.

@GoldenChaatAndPaan over by USF has delicious pani puri made with chick peas and potatoes for just $7.99. It’s such a flavorful Indian street food dish featuring herbs like coriander and mint, spices like cumin and chaat masala, and lemon — it’s absolutely worth trying!

I had a very enjoyable lunch on Saturday with my friend @brianclivaz at the new Gallery restaurant @thesavoylondon. It's a beautiful room, particularly known for its afternoon teas. Three of the hotel's restaurants are operated by @gordonramsayrestaurants, and the Savoy is going it alone with this all-day dining space, serving "a variety of grazing and substantial sharing plates showcasing traditional recipes with a modern twist". Something might have been a little lost in translation in the Savoy's citation of Auguste Escoffier as the inspiration for dishes such as Auguste's Sole Tacos, Bacchus grape, hispi cabbage (£23): goujons in tortillas. And I'm not convinced that the culinary traditions of hamburgers or pizzas come to us in a straight line from Escoffier. But the dishes are well executed by Executive Chef Gerald Quadros, the portions are large, the room is gorgeous, and we enjoyed a bottle of Domaine Bruno Sorg pinot noir for £65. Among the dishes we tried were classic Caesar salad (£23); Savoy Club Sandwich, Rhug Estate chicken, Clarence Court egg (£34); and (my favourite) Creedy Carver duck en croûte, Noble Grape jelly, fig relish (£26). We shared a Classic Margarita pizza, Isle of Wight tomato, burrata (£25).
