This past week has been an absolute blowout, but the carnitas tacos were definitely the highlight. On Sunday mornings, this deli taqueria on Horseblock Road in Farmingville cooks up some killer carnitas and lamb barbacoa.

@dontaco_mg is owned by folks from Mexico City and that explains why the huaraches are so good, especially when topped with al pastor from the trompo. The @newsdayfeedme team wants to do a larger article about this fascinating street filled with Mexican and Portuguese restaurants. But for now, I’m enthusiastically recommending this taco joint. The carnitas were juicy, unctuous and some of the best I’ve had … ever.

Make sure to ask for some of that salsa verde on the side. Whoa.

We tried them after 3 years and they are still one of the best after moving to @porkys_backyard. Got the wings and the dirty rice with mac. I would say I prefer the Mac loaded over the dirty rice because that gives out more of the hot chicken flavor 🔥

Seafood options were amazing as well. We liked the catfish 🤤

It's BLT season, hurrah. Being a huge fan of the @lynettempls breakfast sandwich, I had a hunch that I’d be all over the kitchen’s BLT, and I was not disappointed. For starters, the focaccia is right on the money: doesn't overdo it with the olive oil and salt, and has a not-too-bread-ey texture that’s semi-spongy on the inside and usefully sturdy on the outside. The top slice is treated to an uncomplicated tomato spread, pan con tomate-style, and I’m so stealing this brilliant technique for my next at-home BLT. I mean, the BLT (for me, anyway) is all about the tomato, so why not go all out? The bottom focaccia slice gets a generous swipe of garlicky mayo, which pairs nicely with the punchy arugula and the thick, chewy and altogether stellar house-cured bacon. And such a great tomato! It’s a few slices of a super-juicy yellow heirloom (Golden Jubilee, perhaps?), which contribute a welcome pop of color. In the past, I’ve been ambivalent when it comes to inserting avocado into what I consider to be the fairly rigid-by-design BLT format, but lately I’m enthusiastically Team Avocado, a preference reinforced with this fabulous iteration. Price? Eighteen bucks, with a (decent) side salad, and so worth it. This is one of those sandwiches that looks great on a plate but proves in practice to be so unwieldy that it's nearly impossible to consume in the traditional hold-in-your-hands style, at least without coming off as a total slob. I was debating back and forth if I should share my experience at Nightshade Noodle Bar (which I just went for my birthday after wanting to go for a long time), and I decided to do so because there aren’t many reviews of elevated spots like this. For me, the cuisine leaned heavier and sweeter than I usually enjoy—so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. Technique was solid, but not every dish landed for my palate.

At $160 (plus 20% service fee, drinks not included), I found the overall experience expensive. Service was very friendly, but the pacing was uneven—long gaps early on, then some courses rushed together. Also, while it is a blind tasting menu, I felt rushed in making my upfront choices and wish the staff had checked in along the way to adjust based on what I liked (since the menu is so large, and you only get to try 14 dishes). That could’ve made the experience more tailored and memorable.

All that said, the staff were accommodating, and some dishes really shined. I’m glad I went, but for me, there is still room for improvement.

It was really dark in there so couldn’t some ‘pics’ had to be videos for decent resolution. Here is the rest of my review for each dish (in the same order as above):
- Chilean uni brûlée ✨
Well executed, but just not for me
- Tamarind bbq moulard duck
Sweetness too strong. Not bad technique—probably just a personal miss.
- Charred chinese broccoli
Silky, smooth garlic sauce—absolutely addictive. ❤️
- Crispy chicken 🍗
Well executed, very sweet, balanced flavors—but nothing special
- Green papaya salad
Good textures, but overly salted and unbalanced.
Also a bit tricky to eat.
- claypot caramel foie gras
Rich, sweet, and fun— too much foie grass in one bite
- Homemade egg noodles
Bold, flavorful, almost overwhelming— must like Thai basil + Sichuan peppers 🌶️
- Tiger’s Blood 🍓
Super refreshing—didn’t expect to love this palate cleanser so much!
- Salted chocolate mousse
Excellent—salty and rich. Too much coffee for me.
