I’ve followed Waleed Ogbah since he first started a pop-up in the same building as The Vancouver Sun, serving Yemenese food on weekends, in a coffee shop that operated only on weekdays. That was in 2017.
Since then, he’s grown Saba Foods, into a flourishing restaurant. It had moved around few times before settling in South Granville, in the elegant former West restaurant location. The stars of the menu have always been the lamb and chicken haneeth, slow braised and succulent. But he’s added another — the tomahawk steak. “If you asked for a knife, it means we didn’t do a good job,” he said of the haneeth when I first interviewed him.
The other Saba strength is the warm hospitality, filtering down from Ogbah. Less

Review of Yava Kitchen and Brewhouse

First Impressions
Our debut visit to @yavaatl in Cumming, near Lake Lanier, was a mixed experience. Although we had a rocky start due to being seated at a less-than-ideal location—a cramped two-top by the restroom and a pole—the rest of the evening was promising.

Beverage Selection
We started off with an American IPA, which was better than average. I was a bit surprised that, given the substantial size of the restaurant and brewery, they only had four beers on offer. However, the quality of the IPA made up for the limited selection, hinting at a potential for future growth in their beer offerings.

Appetizers
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the chicken wings. They were overnight brined, blanched, and flash fried to crispy perfection. I opted for the Alabama barbecue sauce, which was both flavorful and satisfying. While Buffalo is known for its Buffalo sauce and Atlanta for its lemon pepper wings, this Alabama barbecue stood out as one of the best non-traditional flavors I've tried. They also offer a pecan habanero Buffalo style for those looking to experiment.

Main Courses

Club Sandwich
My adult son and I have been on a quest to find a new favorite club sandwich since Peach & the Pork Chop closed its doors. Yava Kitchen's version might just take the top spot, potentially even surpassing Brookwood Café. The sandwich features really good turkey and crispy applewood smoked bacon, with a creative twist—Granny Smith apples instead of traditional tomatoes. While I wouldn't mind a bit more aioli, it was a commendable sandwich overall.

Hearth Grilled Airline Chicken
Both Mrs. Grub and I liked her hearth grilled airline chicken breast served with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Conclusion
Overall, Yava Kitchen and Brewhouse provided a pleasant dining experience, despite the initial seating turnoff. The quality of the food and the potential in their beer offerings make it a spot worth revisiting. Less

🤤🤤THE BEST MEAL IVE HAD IN A WHILE! [INVITE]

@suumkitchen recently invited me to their restaurant to try some of their lovey food! It was so good im already thinking about what I'm going to have next!!

The owner is cordon bleu trained and the menu show it!

We shared a platter to start which came with lots of lovely different things to try including spring rolls, pork mango salad and chilli king prawns.

For mains we tried the curry (i need that sauce bottled up so I can purchase!!), the seabass (flakeiest fish I think ive ever had) and the shaking beef!

For dessert we tried Vietnamese style yogurt with black rice (which wasn't our thing tbh) and pandan leaf pudding...which was glorious!!

If you're looking for somewhere special to go, this place is it. The food is glorious, the hospitality is incredible. It's been a week and im still thinking about it!!

My breakfast sandwich obsession continues, this time with a return visit to @heathersmpls. Do you ever encounter an item that’s making a brief appearance but you hope it earns a berth on the daily menu? That’s the case with the basil pesto breakfast sandwich that Heather Asbury and her crew were cranking out this weekend. All the components worked — and then some — starting with a sturdy white sourdough sandwich loaf that responded really well to the buttered-and-grilled treatment. The lively pesto seemed to be heralding spring’s imminent arrival, and the presence of prosciutto, Muenster and onion gave the proceedings some heft, flavor-wise. All kinds of gratitude for using the oven to boost the qualities of out-of-season tomatoes. And the scrambled eggs were perfection; seriously, when I attempted them at home, I channel the talents of the kitchen pros at Heather’s. Also, I thank them for serving a side salad that skips greens that were harvested, washed and bagged a week ago in California and instead features lettuces that have crunch, flavor and life; you are role models for garde-mangers everywhere. The $18 price seemed to be a reflection of its this-could-easily-serve-two portion size. Heather’s just celebrated its sixth birthday (and here's to many, many, many more). third time back here + each time i rmbr why. food rocks, they’re always serving up something new + service is amazing. chef @haran__kumar = consistently brilliant 💯

they moved from tiong bahru to kampong bugis last year (taking over the old lucali + kilo kitchen space) + this was my first visit to the new digs.

quick tip: it gets warm in thurrr so dress light + the acoustics are funky so smaller groups are best for actually chatting.
