A great lunch downtown at @lufu.nola

At least our news this week on the closure of the second LUFU in the French Quarter put the spotlight back on the Decatur Debacle — just days after @sbisanola closed.

But remember the original LUFU NOLA in the CBD remains open and served up a fantastic meal. Check out:

We came for one-night Thai specials I hadn’t seen anywhere else (chicken foot stew, anyone?).

We went back for American steakhouse-style ribeye and a tom yum pizza that gave the goodness of next-day Thai food leftovers new meaning back at home.

Here’s a look at a few dishes, including that tasty pork rib soup, fried pork ribs with all that raw ginger, shrimp with an electrifying sauce, papaya salad with pork rind ....and those feet.

Yes, I am irresistibly drawn to a pun. Also, I find myself drawn to @pluckwines .

This wine bar has one of the deepest and best wine lists in New Orleans, and it’s also the most accessible thanks to the way Pluck operates.

Pluck is a wine bar built around a restaurant, with a full-service approach to both.

There is the level of pride and knowledge normally encountered at a winery’s own tasting room, from people presenting wine they had a hand in making.

15 minute Thai curry that is soooo good and effortless, it can be made in a blink of an eye and you can choose your own protein to add.

The gorgeous bon appetit dish is from @bellamaison.usa

Ingredients:

Tofu or any other choice of protien
2-3 cloves very finely chopped garlic
2 tbsp Thai red curry paste
1 tbsp chili garlic paste
1 cup of thick coconut milk
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp of chili flakes
1/2 cup water
Sliced red peppers
1/2 tsp lemon juice
Chopped cilantro and Serrano peppers to garnish

Method:
In a pan add oil and let it heat, add sliced tofu and let jt shallow fry from both sides, keep aside.
In the same pan add chopped garlic, saute a bit and then add thai red curry paste, chili garlic paste saute for a minute. And then add coconut milk along with salt, pepper, lemon juice, maple syrup and chili flakes.
Mix it and give it a slight boil, add your fav veggies( beans/red peppers etc) cover and cook again on medium heat for 2-3 minutes, adjust consistency with water.

Once done add your protein, garnish with lots of chopped cilantro, Serrano peppers and lemon.

Serve hot with fresh jasmine rice.

Chefs @chefadolfo and @feetz93 brought lost NOLA restaurant RioMar back for the night at @hotandsoul for a special dinner. It sold out, of course.

But, Hot & Soul will be serving the night’s dishes all week as specials next to their regular menu.

That’s the Panamanian ceviche, mussels with chorizo (the broth brought me all the way back to S. Peters at Julia) , oysters RioMar, black rice with squid and perfect shrimp and tres leches with all the leches.

A fish called three line grunt ? Very specifically young yellowtail? Japanese barracuda?

There’s always something I’ve never tried before on the lengthy specials board(s) around @nanamiuptown

And so, even when on one visit, all I intended to have was a simple bento box lunch I of course, overordered once again.

With no flash, just great fish, chef Yuwa has created, but truly feels like a Japanese restaurant, not just another Restaurant serving sushi.

The ethos of the craft carry through the whole operation — including that onigiri bento box.

Seasonal sea eel, raw scallop scores into a flower of soft ruffles, uni and handrolls and always something new arriving for the next shipment.

He will do “dressed”
sushi with sauces and because this is on trend and in demand, but prefers not to.

My advice, put yourself in this sushi chef’s hands.

New Orleans restaurants get creative in the summer to drum up business — it’s one of the ways that dining in the slow season can be a delight for locals. Often, it’s a time for familiar restaurants to try out new things.

But @bourbonhousenola is going the opposite direction by tapping into a rich history and seam of Creole flavor from its lost sister restaurant, Palace Cafe.

It’s a special lunch-only menu served through the summer.

The classic turtle soup

Andouille crusted Gulf fish with Crystal hot sauce beurre blanc

Shrimp Tchefuncte with mushroom in meuniere sauce

Pasta St. Charles with both the pasta and the fantastic, pecan-smoke andouille from @thecommissary_nola

And to end, a bananas Foster-meets-frozen bourbon milk punch dessert drink I’m calling the Brennan bushwhacker.

Chef Devan even retrieved an old saucepan from the Palace Cafe inventory he once cooked with there for his Bourbon House kitchen now.
