Really liked this place, great cocktails and asian sharing plates. The restaurants a lot of fun and the staff are lovely. I just had some small plates, crispy baby squid with lemon aioli, and seasoned with five spice. Chicken karaage, deep fried japanese style chicken thigh cubes, lime kabayaki sauce. Spicy tuna roll Tanukii, tuna, scallion, cucumber, Jalapeno, Tanukii, spicy Mayo and my favourite dragon roll, tempura Prawn, Avocado, Kabayaki Sauce. The food was excellent, especially the dragon roll and the crispy baby squid. The chicken karaage, to be honest, wasn't the best. The sauce was definitely bought in and tasted like it. But overall, i enjoyed my experience and would definitely go back

There’s a place for the manicured emblems of Japanese staples, like tempura and yakitori, where the batter is feathery and the bulletproof origins of the chicken mean you could eat them rare. There’s also a place for grubbier takes of these staples, which deliver their own brand of pleasures.

Sakutto and Skewers, two unrelated restaurants, fall somewhere in the middle of this spectrum and price their experiences accordingly. You’ll find the nondescript storefront for Sakutto among a cornucopia of foot massage parlors, karaoke bars aglow with naughty slogans, and elderly uncles merrily clipping their toenails. Do not be deceived. As you enter, you’ll find a dressy izakaya barely the width of a singular train carriage and two, maybe three, chefs tending to berths filled with hot oil, shielded by walls of glass.

No one (except me) will admonish you for dousing your food in tempura sauce. Nor will they lecture you on which of the 6 flavored salts to use, depending on what shows up on your plate. Food is batch-cooked to order, and a la carte prompts an unfussy, choose-your-own-adventure experience. Late on a Friday, I dined happily on sweet, pristine oysters shaped and sized like the head of a lacrosse stick. Then I dove into the tempura — all knockouts save for a soggy piece or two. Don’t miss the monkfish liver.

Nearby, at Skewers, the experience may be a little more austere, but it shouldn’t prevent you from dining at the bar and striking up a conversation with Roy Koh, the chef-owner. His craft shows: the tare is restrained, as is the seasoning generally, which means his gently-priced, diligently-grilled skewers won’t send you into an oil-slicked stupor, as some establishments do here. When in an adventurous mood, order the cartilage (crisp), kidney (caramelized), or butterflied heart (tender and rich). But the easygoing ones, like tsukune and thigh, are home runs too.

Finally made it to North China Eatery. 🥟 Wife always does and I kinda went white other than dumplings. Of course, it’s the dumplings everyone talks about. Thus, I got beef with carrot, pork and shrimp with chives, and lamb. Definitely very good, though Lao Wei Dao remains my favorite.

As recently as three years ago, I would have gotten cumin lamb as a main dish. Went with a very good black pepper beef. The biggest difference between this dish at real Chinese restaurants and American pepper steak is, as the name says, the authentic is much heavier with black pepper in the sauce. Hunan Garden’s Taiwanese black pepper beef tops Canton Cook’s (Marietta, not Sandy Springs) American version as my fave, but this is good.

Wife and I liked it, and her chicken fried rice is better than most. Man, they were busy even when we left at 2:30ish, both eat-in and take-out. I’ll probably get cumin lamb next time. The fact they have a lot of stuff for Americans plus my college-aged daughter loves her dumplings means I can come back with other members of the Grubber family. It’s on Buford Highway, right near the Doraville and Chamblee borders.

We are witnessing a change of guard with a new generation of chefs taking charge of restaurants. The hot shot chefs and restaurateurs of the early noughts, the generation that spearheaded the stand alone restaurant movement, have transitioned into wise (mostly) mentors.

Few chefs though face as much of a challenge as @rijul.gulati @indianaccentmumbai who needs to live up to the legacy of the two Mehrotras, particularly Manish. There’s also the matter of Mumbai not quite warming up to the iconic brand as much as its Delhi counterparts.

If his new tasting menu is anything to go by then it shows he’s up to the challenge.

The only one course I took exception to was the Baked Duck Pulao where I found the rice to be too pungent and the duck too ephemeral. I didn’t find the basic wine pairing too thrilling, but I also accept wine paired menus are not easy to pull off. While Rijul has done a great job incorporating elements from Delhi and across the country, the absence of Bombay, the Konkan, or Maharashtra is a lacunae that ought to be addressed.

But these are niggling concerns and the menu on the whole is quite thoughtful and engaging. There’s a wonderful rendition of the famous New Friends Colony shawarma and an exceptional crab ghee roast in nandu rasam. I thought marinating the fish-shaped slices of regular carrot in the kanji pickle was quite an unexpected twist.

And I’m seriously contemplating making a pit stop at Indian Accent everytime I’m in BKC for the Barrel Aged Boulvardier.

Ooh mama! I hit the jackpot this evening with Mercadito 2 Taqueria, a Mexico City-style joint I found on Google. Huaraches and tlacoyos took a few minutes to come out, because they were freshly made and crisp on their pancakey edges. More to come on this place in Hempstead but I’m pumped right now!
