Have we reached peak caviar? Over the past decade, diners in Singapore and Hong Kong have seen the same parlor trick on repeat: cold, thin noodles slicked with enough truffle oil to give a petrol station a run for its money. The one at @louise.hkg is not a parlor trick, nor is the version at its (debatable) progenitor, @gunthers_sg . Both have their virtues, and though Gunther’s has its formula down, Louise’s — like its sister, @claudinerestaurant — leans on shio kombu, and the pasta’s sandier texture clings better to the heady sauce.

Yes, on one occasion, the angel pasta here was a notch past al dente, but it delivers the pleasures that many other dishes at Louise do. Consider the chicken, which, among its brethren of large-format lookalikes across Hong Kong, still stands tall: a yellow breed brined for four days, wearing a handsome, bronzed cap of a proper roast; the showy tableside carve; and rice dewy with fat from all the trimmings and cracklings. Consider, too, the plates you might skip past: sweet, confit red pepper with burrata and good olive oil; grilled broccoli with a rich grenobloise, sharpened by green chile, that makes a case for more vegetable-forward mains; and a tall île flottante crowned with pistachios and hazelnuts — a dessert that ought to appear on more French menus, old-school be damned.

There are fussier detours — namely a manicured onion tart over a weighty vin jaune — but two meals (dinner in the main room, followed by lunch at the more casual terrace) convinced this jaded critic that upstairs and downstairs can meet when the basics are fussed over, too. The butter is an addictive amalgam of sour cream, butter, yogurt, soy, and plenty of seeds; the salad features a comely, crisp wedge cloaked in a knockout dressing of hazelnut, walnut, and olive oils bound with lemon. Last weekend, we had a quick getaway to San Remo, Italy for lunch with a friend, @lukelombardo2.0.

We did some shopping first. The restaurant was terrific, called @picocentrale. Our friend had gone there days before to talk to the owner, Gianmarco, and the chef, Giuseppe, and entreat them to have porcinis, which are just coming into season.

They had some just for us, which Luke suggested we have fried. They were otherworldly, their crunchy crust sealing in the aromatic flesh, which had become molten and custardy like marrow.

Gianfranco showed us the white truffles—also just in season— they had on hand and who could resist? Shaved truffle slices rained over bowls of buttered fresh tagliolini (they weigh the truffle before and after so they know what to charge), and if there’s a finer dish to be had, I’ve not yet encountered it.

Pico Centrale is a real find (locals know to go in the fall and winter to avoid summertime tourist mobs), so don’t miss it on your next trip to San Remo.

PS: There is a terrific designer outlet outside of town, and I’m still bitter about being talked out of a 700€ Burberry trench in May. 🤩

It hasn’t been around forever, but **Ry & Howie’s** in **Medford** has that *instant classic* feel. A buddy mentioned it a few years back, and ever since, it’s been one of those reliable spots that hits every time. The guys behind it are **restaurant pros** who know exactly how to deliver Philly-style comfort food with precision and flavor.

Finally tried their **chicken cheesesteak** — every bit as strong as their **roasted pork** and **cheesesteak**, all of which easily rank among the best I’ve had in South Jersey. Also took home an **Italian hoagie**, which never disappoints. Word is they’re **expanding to Glassboro**, and **Rowan students** are about to score big.

The setup is classic: small kitchen, a few tables, mostly takeout, but everyone works like clockwork. No gimmicks, just pure execution. If you’re chasing the real deal in **NJ or the Philly burbs**, this belongs on your shortlist.

Even an hour after opening, the place buzzes with energy, with around 50 people already inside savoring the flavors. While the high ranking might feel slightly generous, the quality of the barbecue justifies the crowd's enthusiasm.

Must-Try Delights
Fatty Brisket: Excellent and a favorite among visitors, though just shy of the top 50 outside of the Lone Star State.

Beef Tips: Cooked with sauce, though some might prefer less of it.

Hey food snobs! I recently made my second visit to @washingtonswharf at the Cumming City Center, and here's my honest take on the experience:

Food Highlights
Best Fish & Chips in Metro Atlanta: The fish was perfectly crispy and flavorful.
Shrimp & Chips: Believe it or not, even better than the fish!
British Chips: A strong contender for my second-favorite fries right after Fred’s.
Chicken Fingers: My "landlubber" bride and I both agree they are among the best we've had.

A New Adventure at Rise & Slice
During my visit, I had a chance encounter with the owner, who recently opened Rise & Slice just a few doors down. Fun fact: he used to own The Monkey Barrel in Gainesville! He mentioned that they offer a legit cheesesteak, and based on my experience at Washington's Wharf, I’m optimistic about trying it.

Former regulars from The Monkey Barrel recommended the Pasta Diablo—sounds like a must-try! Rise & Slice is a deli/bakery offering breakfast and lunch, currently in its soft opening phase. When I took a peek inside, the employees were bustling around the small bakery market. I’d love to know more, as the menu piqued my curiosity.

The buzz around this place, coupled with high praise for the owner’s former restaurant, The Monkey Barrel in Gainesville, made it a must-visit. Fans of the Hall County spot will be thrilled to find many beloved dishes featured in this Forsyth County newcomer.

The Cheesesteak: A Standout Dish
The cheesesteak at Rise and Slice is a noteworthy creation. While it may not be 100% authentic, it’s undeniably delicious. With a generous portion of meat by Georgia standards, it stands as one of the best cheesesteaks in the area.

Sides and More
The loaded potato salad, although just shy of the life-changing version I once had at Smokey Dreams in Greenville, SC, is still a delightful side dish. My wife’s hashbrown bowl didn’t quite surpass our favorite from Gracious Plenty, but it earned two enthusiastic thumbs up. The house-made biscuit is also a winner.

Breakfast and Lunch Delights
Currently operating as a breakfast and lunch spot, Rise and Slice offers breakfast until closing time. The quality of the food makes it a place worthy of repeat visits.

Discovering Authentic Flavors at Mr. Lin Authentic Chinese
I recently stumbled upon Mr. Lin Authentic Chinese in the Rivermont Shopping Center, the only stretch of Holcomb Bridge Road that falls within Johns Creek. To my surprise, this hidden gem offers a delightful experience with authentic Chinese cuisine and American-Chinese as well. The boiled fish (swai or sole) and dumplings were very dishes, comparable to my favorites along Medlock Bridge though not quite as great. But it’s a notch above the nearby Four Seasons, known for its mix of American-Chinese and sprinkling of authentic options.

Authenticity and Americanized
As the name suggests, Mr. Lin provides more authentic offerings than Four Seasons. The restaurant came under new ownership in November of last year, though the exact timing of the name change remains unclear. Interestingly, the menu still features "Yummy Top" in parentheses, a curious choice given Yummy Top's not-so-stellar reputation. However, don't let this deter you—if you sort reviews by the most recent on Yelp, you'll find that all feedback since the management change has been positive. So, focus on the current experience rather than past ratings.

A Bustling Spot
I visited around 1:45 PM, and the place was buzzing with customers. I'm eager to see how Mrs. Grubber will react to their extensive menu catering to her gringo palate. I enjoy American-Chinese too and in fact, there is a bigger void for that than the real thing.

Maybe it’s appropriate that East Roswell’s best Asian option is in fact on the edge of Johns Creek in the one shopping center that is bordered by HBR.
