One thing I’ve learned about restaurants over the years — don’t get attached. The business is too unpredictable. Today’s hotspot becomes tomorrow’s “surprise shutter.”

Of course, every rule has its exceptions, which means I’m going to miss the hell out of @rielhouston.

When I published my take on Houston’s top 100 restaurants in 2019, picking Riel for no. 1 made sense. It embodies everything I love about dining in Houston: creativity, consistency, diversity, and a quirky sense of humor — after all, it takes a certain sensibility to serve caviar tater tots.

The pics I’ve posted remind me of the many meals I’ve shared at Riel with friends and family. I treasure these memories.

Really very excited to say that I have another restaurant review in this weekend’s @theobserveruk and up online now. It is of the hugely impressive Solina Pasta in Bath – a city that I briefly called home and one that, as readers of PICKY will know, still has my heart in all sorts of acute, complicated ways. One word to BEST describe Minari is IMPRESSIVE! From the moment you walk in their doors—you’re greeted by sultry red lights, a stunning bar area, beautiful artwork, a spacious dining room, tons of natural light + greenery 🌿 & a perfectly curated Sunday brunch menu of snacks, plates, accompaniments, & brunch cocktails w/ NA options! I’ve been here for dinner a few times, brunch, and now Dim Sundays — I can officially say this was my MOST MEMORABLE and TASTIEST experience to date!

☑️My favorite dim sim/dumplings are the fried spring roll, honey butter toast, pineapple bun, mochi biscuit + the Szechuan ribs & then on the dumplings side — obsessed w/ the squid ink, shrimp + fennel, & the pearl meatballs. DON’T SKIP the French toast, cream cheese wontons, BLT Gimbap, crispy hashbrowns or scrambled eggs 🍳 w/ pork belly. Make your dim sum Sunday reservation ASAP! Can’t wait to go back soon 💁🏻‍♀️.
