Pretty rare for me to drink/post Bordeaux, but i felt that from an experiential perspective, this is worth a reflection. All wines were served blind today, and these were in a flight alongside the 2016 Le Pin. Pretty rare for me to drink/post Bordeaux, but i felt that from an experiential perspective, this is worth a reflection. All wines were served blind today, and these were in a flight alongside the 2016 Le Pin. I got pretty close to guess the vintages and the 84 was in particularly good shape.. coffee, leather and tea driven with a plummy core. 73 was definitely on the way down and out... tired and somewhat light on the palate, with the vintage character coming through. 2016 was indeed a rather good wine.. infanticide to drink, but the finesse and backbone on this suggests some pretty strong potential down the line. Dark berry, cocoa, tobacco and spice... silky tannins and a really extensive finish. Tough against the 2016 Le Pin, which was absolutely textbook. Anyway, I think I reached my allocation of drinking BDX this year. In all seriousness though, it has been a long long time since I have done verticals of Bordeaux, let alone Petrus... its quite striking to see the change against more modern winemaking, in both good and bad ways. Interesting vertical.
