@remansodopeixe is probably the most well known restaurant in all of Belém. But instead of simply profiting from the hype, it goes way beyond: the restaurant stands as an exponent of the region’s rich food culture, raising awareness of the beautiful culture that Pará and the Amazonian region have to offer to the rest of us.

The restaurant can be found in a residential villa, in a very homey and familiar environment that perfectly illustrates what the establishment is all about.

The whole menu is focused mainly on fish and seafood options. As a starter, the classic shrimp breaded in tapioca flour is a perfect way to start a meal. Choosing a main course was not an easy task, given the variety of fish preparations, including a few “caldeiradas” that sounded very appealing.

I ended up ordering what is probably their signature dish: a recipe created by the family’s patriarch that has been on the menu for over twenty years, Moqueca à paraense do Seu Chicão.

Moqueca is a type of fish stew that has regional variations across Brazil, with three more known versions (Moqueca Baiana, Capixaba and Paraense) each coming from a different State. This way, I knew that I had to try the Paraense version while in Pará, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. The preparation included local ingredients like tucupi and jambu that gives it an unique taste.

Desserts are also fantastic here, most of them showcasing fruits that are very popular in the North of Brazil. I was fortunate to have an appetite to try two of them: a bacuri tiramisu and a pudding with cumaru syrup and caramelized manioc flour.
