Osteria Del Mirasole - San Giovanni in Persiceto (Italy)
Some people say that @osteriamirasole is worth the drive to San Giovanni in Persiceto. Well, that could not be further from the truth as it implies that investing a little bit of your time to get there is some sort of penalti. In my eyes, it is a pilgrimage. And the restaurant is actually worth the plane ticket all the way from Brazil.

Antica Osteria del Mirasole embodies everything I love about food. There is no bullshit here. No unnecessary narrative behind the dishes there. It is a place where you feel the truth behind each bite. A restaurant that thrives in its simplicity and showcases Emilian Romagnan heritage at its finest. Where the quality of ingredients and mastery of techniques are at the level of any of the world’s top restaurants, but in a more down to earth and real environment.
They own a farm close to the restaurant, where they source many of the ingredients and produce their own cheese. Their signature dish is the tortellini in creamy sauce, obtained through the skimming process of the milk used in their Parmigiano production. This dish deserves a post of its own and it is something that any food lover should taste at least once.
The tagliatelle Bolognese was the ultimate Italian trattoria comforting food. The meaty ragu sauce, called “cortile” is an umami bomb. Differently from other places that I visited, it consists of a mix of beef, pork, chicken livers and others, paying tribute to an ancient cultural heritage from the countryside of Persciceto.
The green lasagna was another spectacular dish, with a creamy bechamel from their dairy and a hearty meat ragu, combined in thin layers that ended with a beautiful crust on top.
This is also a meat lover’s paradise. Steak and different types of meat are cooked in a stone fireplace, with smoky notes from the wood embers that burn slowly and warm up the cozy dining room.
Tiramisu for dessert was the only possible way that I found to end such an epic meal at this neighborhood trattoria that conquered the world. Upon leaving my table, I could not help but feel happiness. Until next time, Mirasole!

a lovely easter weekend getaway to bologna, a place i’ve been aching to go for some time. started the trip with the best best best spot a small train ride away from the main city. known for their ‘mirasole outcrop cream’ - from cows from their own dairy farms to make cheese, creams and milks, its definitely worth the journey to try this.

a lovely easter weekend getaway to bologna, a place i’ve been aching to go for some time. started the trip with the best best best spot a small train ride away from the main city. known for their ‘mirasole outcrop cream’ - from cows from their own dairy farms to make cheese, creams and milks, its definitely worth the journey to try this.
we began with some bites, like the mortadella sandwich and homemade ricotta cheese from their farm, the mortadella ham and cheese quality was one of the best i’ve ever had, so so good. we also got their chicken liver on toast which was literally mashed livers so it was a bit too meaty and rich for me personally.
we continued with the star of the night, their rendition of tortellini with their ‘mirasole outcrop cream’ which was one of the best dishes i’ve had this year, so silky and creamy, rich milk gaminess balanced with the perfect amounts of cheese without being cloying. their ragu bolognese was also very hearty, heavy on meaty flavour but highlight here was the egg yolk which was bouncy to the bite.
for mains we got the rib of veal bolognese, veal was so tender but full of milky flavour in the meat, sandwiched with a layer of parma ham before fried and topped with the same lovely cream. and wanted to try something from the grill so got their recommended royal neck of cow, rich of beef flavour with a nice chew, also loved the accompanying vegetables. to end, tiramisu and panna cotta can be skipped, enjoyed the balsamico on vanilla ice-cream most, but desserts here could be improved. highly highly recommend, will for sure come back to sample more dishes as well as revisiting the classics. the stay and breakfast here was also great, but not a must experience.

I was the last customer to leave the lunch service (always happens 😅) and the very kind waiter told me the chef already left to sleep 🤣 (好有性格) he is such a character 😂. But then he said there is a chef in the kitchen who is Japanese and if I want to meet him? I thought why not? And he came out and we chatted for awhile. His name is Kousuke and he has been working here for 3 years already.

And now the mystery is solved. Why is this restaurant place so good? Because in all good restaurants in Europe there lies a Japanese chef in the kitchen 🤪🤪🤪 (ok just kidding....)
