In Dubai there will always be the shiny new thing, that trendy new thing or just that trend we’ve seen cycle on loop again and again.

I cover those as a food writer partly both out of intrigue and strategically. Go where the people want you to go.
But I spent 2025 also thinking long and hard about what I want to cover and, with this modest platform, there are places deserving of your attention—our attention; places where you want to nudge people. Places perhaps known by some but not by many.
@hashmibarbeque.dxb is one such place.
“Hashmi Barbeque is a bone-gnawing, lip-licking restaurant occupying serious square footage in Al Barsha—an often-overlooked Dubai neighbourhood better known for cheap apartments and the unsolicited ‘business cards’ of scantily clad ladies surreptitiously tucked into your car window, usually the driver’s side, or so I am told.”
Hashmi Barbeque is the Kenyan-meets-Indian restaurant that more people should talk about—ideally with a mouthful of lamb and hot sauce.
Eat the mutton samosas. Order the chicken chooza. Get a plate (maybe two) of the grilled lamb chops because sharing tugs on a will-power I do not have in me. Chase it down with the kulfi ice cream.

This is where it’s at. The most incredible, flavoursome and juicy tandoori chicken in town. It’s been a favourite of my dad’s for many years and has been growing in popularity because of how simple and delicious the food is here. The restaurant is famous for its Chooza chicken - a loved chicken recipe from Nairobi that blends together Kenyan and Indian spices. The Chooza spring chicken is spatchcocked and scored all over before being marinated in a blend of ingredients that includes yogurt, Kashmiri chilli’s, garlic, ginger, coriander and mustard oil amongst lots of other secret spices. Marination here is at-least 24h so that the flavours seep all the way down to the bone. The result is a deep red colour that is beautifully smoked and charred in the clay tandoor. The flavours are incredible, it’s so unique and you won’t taste anything quite like it - it’s spicy, tangy, and well balanced. Mouthwatering chicken. Everything develops in intensity after it hits the grill. Extra Chooza sauce on the side is essential for the rice. IMO, the tandoori chicken legs here are the co-star of the show, so make sure you order them. Super juicy . Lamb chops are also excellent, as is the paneer tikka and the masala fries. Usually I’ll do half a Chooza and 3 chicken legs plus a few chops. Nothing like a Hashmi session.. #notoriousfoodie 🙅🏽♂️
