One of the things I love about Tokyo is that there are so many amazing restaurants, places that in any other city would be hugely famous, but here they just do excellent work quietly. Shirato is one of those gems hidden in plain sight, right near the busy Roppongi crossing.

It’s an intimate counter, elegant but not fussy. The menu is twenty courses, most just a few bites, so you can really see their range and talent. The food is French with a strong Japanese sensibility and some Chinese flavors sneaking into a few dishes. Wine pairings are smart and thoughtful.

These pictures are from three visits, in different seasons. The soupe de poisson and the sweet shrimp are two standouts I enjoyed all three times.
