WHEN SIMPLE IS SUBLIME ❤️

The jambon beurre @petitecerisedc is fantastically delicious. It’s essentially a ham and butter sandwich with cheese as the only other component. Many of us ate the standard ham-and-cheese sandwich in childhood. But few likely had one this good. Petite Cerise’s version is made with locally sourced @manifest_bread, generous smears of luscious French butter, and real cheese that would never carry the prefix “American” as a necessary descriptor 🇫🇷

In France, the jambon beurre is a classic lunch staple with roots that date back to the 19th century. It’s purposely simple and widely available. In 21st-century United States though, such simplicity can be surprising and remarkable. At least that was my reaction to it. In an age where the flashiest and most visually appealing food often receive unwarranted attention and praise, I found this classic sandwich revelatory 🤯🥹

I caught Chef @jjlthedabney on my way out and told him how much I loved it. He mentioned that in opening this second restaurant, the aim was to serve simple foods that just happen to taste great. I would argue the jambon beurre perfectly captures that sentiment in composition and execution 👏

I should mention I took a half sandwich home and left it sitting on my kitchen counter for hours. In the early evening, the bread had gone limp. The crust was no longer crunchy. But it had taken on a wonderfully chewy texture. Combined with the trio of great meat, cheese, and butter, the jambon beurre was still as marvelous as my earlier lunch. I devoured the leftovers with gusto. In perfect comforting silence, I stared longingly at the crumbs and almost yearned they would somehow, in some way, miraculously reform, so I could eat it all over again 😍😘🥰
