Nasi Katok Mabohai - Brunei

This is nasi katok, Brunei’s iconic everyday meal.
The name literally means “knock rice,” dating back to the days when people would knock on a seller’s door to place their order.

It all started here, in the Mabohai area in the 1980s, sold from a home rather than a traditional restaurant. To this day, people stop by and knock on Auntie’s window.

The formula is simple: rice, sambal, fried chicken. This version also comes with dried anchovies, egg and cucumber.

I also tried their pulut panggang, grilled sticky rice wrapped around a savory filling.

Two very simple foods, but both give you a pretty direct taste of everyday Brunei.
