One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Honolulu and also one of the hardest to get into. Tonkatsu Tamafuji is a place I return to because of how consistently excellent the food is.

The katsu here is everything you want it to be. Crisp on the outside, incredibly juicy inside, and cooked in a way that highlights the quality of the proteins rather than masking them. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Honolulu and also one of the hardest to get into. Tonkatsu Tamafuji is a place I return to because of how consistently excellent the food is.

The katsu here is everything you want it to be. Crisp on the outside, incredibly juicy inside, and cooked in a way that highlights the quality of the proteins rather than masking them. Each cut feels carefully chosen and handled with care, resulting in a meal that is deeply satisfying without feeling heavy. It’s also a reminder that you don’t have to go all the way to Japan to experience truly great Katsu.

Reservations are famously tough to come by, but there’s good news! Tamafuji is expanding into a larger space with more seating and an open kitchen, which should make it easier for more people to experience what they do so well.
