Mercearia Fantinato Curitiba

As soon as I landed in Curitiba for the first time, I was fully focused on trying carne de onça. This cultural heritage recipe from Paraná’s capital translates to “Jaguar meat”, and while the name might throw some people off, it is actually made with beef. The unconventional name comes simply from the breath that diners will have upon finishing their plates, given the amount of spices used.

@merceariafantinato is one of the most traditional places when it comes to carne de onça, and was my particular choice of where to try it out for the first time. Aside from the usual combination of onions, olive oil, scallions and salt, their version also includes garlic, lots of paprika, brandy and red pepper.

The beef, which is typically from a lean cut and served raw, is not minced here. Instead, it is manipulated in a processor, resulting in a more pasty texture. Another thing that sets this place apart from others is the fact that the dish is finalized on the table, in front of the clientele.

Served with a side of dark mustard, bread and butter, carne de onça highlights the freshness of its ingredients. A visit to Mercearia Fantinato is a must if you are looking for a good version of this classic “boteco” food in Curitiba. As a bonus you will step back in time, in an environment that recalls old school grocery shops.
