The wines at Amanohashidate Hoshino Oto.
Day 1: 2010 As Covas Pinot Noir — a collaboration project between Raul Perez and Rodrigo Mendez, only 800 bottles made. A very elegant expression of PN at only 12.5% alc, the herbal and mineral notes almost resembles a Baden Spatburgunder, but with higher concentration. A rare find.
Day 2: the double portion wine pairing was definitely the way to go. Loved the “compare and contrast” wine vs sake pairings, all worked well with the dishes and a great way to explore local nihonshu.

Some dishes from my two nights stay at Amanohashidate Hoshino Oto. Food here is among the top 5 of all ryokans I’ve stayed at. Chef used to work in Spain and France so meals here are innovative western style instead of traditional kaiseki normally served in onsen ryokans. The chef’s signature dish is ravioli, porcini on first night and potatoes on second, which were also my favorite. The quality of food served here is definitely Michelin star worthy. •

Pros: spacious rooms with stylish decor, ocean view and high end amenities; every room has both indoor and outdoor onsen and a pool; top quality food; good wine/sake selection and proper sommelier service (will do a separate post on food and wine)
Cons: a bit far from Tokyo; not within walking distance from all sightseeing places
