My hero this week was @melireports , who found the one and only Sonoran taco shop on Long Island. This new spot is as tiny as it is charming. A team of four people prepared our tacos from scratch, making the flour tortillas by hand and grilling the carne asada (not on mesquite but at least on a real grill).
The owner, a Long Island guy, told me he was inspired by trips to San Diego and Vegas, where he ate at the famous Tacos El Gordo. He teamed up with a chef from Puebla to execute the menu.
This was the first time I’ve eaten a taco in a puffy windbreaker, but the flavors were spot on and despite the chill, I felt for a few minutes I was back in AZ. The cumbia music and Los Angeles Azules helped.
This place is super small and doesn’t really have any chairs, so my biggest hope is that it gets popular enough that the owner can open more and larger locations close to me. Let’s make it happen! Read @melireports article on @tacofrescony today at Newsday.com
