On Sunday morning at 8 AM, I had some errands to run in Ogikubo, a place I rarely visit. So, I decided to finally check out "Tomato," which is ranked number one in the curry category on Tabelog. After some delays, I arrived at the restaurant around 10 AM, only to find a line of over 15 people waiting. I was surprised! I had heard that it was recommended to arrive early at such a famous spot, but I didn't expect this level of crowd. As I waited, the line continued to grow, and before I knew it, there were about 10 more people behind me. Around 10:40 AM, I was shocked to see a staff member counting the number of people and placing a sign at the end of the line that read, "Today’s service has ended." They closed before the opening time of 11:30 AM! Despite my surprise, I decided to wait, and at 11:30 AM, the doors opened. People started to enter, and the first group was seated. I continued to wait and finally got inside the restaurant just after 12:30 PM, having waited for 2.5 hours—what a surprise!Inside, there were a few counter seats and about four tables, all in a retro, nostalgic atmosphere that felt very calming. Now, regarding the curry I was looking forward to, I found out that the seasonal vegetable curry was already sold out.Regaining my composure, I looked at the menu and ordered the Beef Javanese Curry, despite being someone who isn't good with spicy food. However, the staff assured me that even those who struggle with spice could enjoy it, so I decided to give it a try. After a short wait, my rice and curry arrived. The rice was topped with cheese, and there was plenty of cheese in the curry as well. I had added cheese as a topping, but there might have been some included already. As for the curry, it was spicy, but not in a way that was overwhelming like chili peppers; it was delicious and manageable even for someone like me who isn't great with spice. The richness of the cheese complemented it perfectly, and I finished it all in no time. It had that classic European-style curry flavor that is still loved today. However, due to the long wait, it might be wise to take precautions against heatstroke during the peak of summer.
