I had a bit of time, so I visited Yanagiya for the first time. I took the Shinkansen to Nagoya and then traveled quite a distance by taxi to reach the charming main branch of Yanagiya. The dining style is centered around irori (traditional Japanese hearths) for each group. As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the sight of yamame (wild sweetfish) and masu (trout) being perfectly grilled, which I enjoyed along with some appetizers. While there was a strong bitterness, I didn’t particularly notice any umami flavor.Next, a variety of dishes featuring pheasant, wild boar, deer, and eel were served, leaving me quite full. The highlight was the mixed wild vegetable clay pot rice that came at the end, which was the most delicious dish of all.We also enjoyed about six bottles of red wine among six people, making it quite affordable at around JPY 25,000 per person. However, I don’t think I’ll be returning. It was a great meal!
