The highest-rated restaurant on Tabelog in Miyagi Prefecture!I made a reservation through TableCheck and visited the Chinese restaurant "Matsuishi" located in Sendai, Mukaiyama. This popular spot has been awarded the Tabelog Award 2026 Bronze and has also been selected as one of the top 100 restaurants in 2026.The owner-chef, Tsubasa Matsuishi, hails from Yamagata Prefecture. He gained 17 years of experience in Chinese cuisine at a hotel in Sendai and won the gold medal and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award at the All Japan Chinese Cuisine Competition in 2014. After further honing his skills at various Chinese restaurants in Sendai, he opened "Matsuishi" in 2022, named after himself.A significant feature of this restaurant is its unique combination of ingredients from Yamagata, the chef's hometown, and Miyagi, where he developed his culinary skills, creating a cohesive course menu. Each dish is accompanied by the name of either prefecture. The interior mainly features a counter with some table seating. The proximity to the kitchen allows for a lively atmosphere where you can watch the cooking process, and the excellent ventilation means that your clothes won’t carry any lingering odors, which is a nice touch. On this day, I enjoyed the Omakase Lunch Course for JPY 9,350. The overall seasoning was gentle, giving a subtle impression of Chinese flavors. Using Yamagata-produced rice oil contributed to a light feeling even after the meal, which is characteristic of Matsuishi. The meal began with corn soup made from Yamagata corn, which was surprisingly sweet, with grilled and fried elements adding texture. One of my favorites was the char siu bao made with pure Kinka pork. The charcoal-grilled char siu was wrapped in a slightly sweet, soft dough made from natural yeast old noodles, and it was incredibly delicious. The mapo eggplant featured large white eggplants that were incredibly tender. While using homemade doubanjiang, it didn’t overpower the dish with spice, allowing the sweetness of the eggplant to shine through. The drink selection included options from Miyagi and Yamagata, and the Chinese tea was plentiful, making it a great choice for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages. The service was calm and attentive, creating a very comfortable atmosphere. I definitely want to visit again.◾️ Omakase Lunch Course JPY 9,350▷ Corn Soup | Corn (Yamagata)▷ Appetizers | Horse Mackerel, Sardine (Miyagi)▷ Spring Roll | Mullet (Miyagi), Edamame (Yamagata)▷ Char Siu Bao | Pure Kinka Pork (Yamagata)▷ Steamed Dish | Sea Bream, Water Spinach, Momotaro Gold Tomato (Miyagi)▷ Mapo Eggplant | White Eggplant, Tsuyahime Rice (Yamagata)▷ Cold Noodles | Campari, Shonai Wheat (Yamagata) / Barracuda, Tsurumurasaki (Miyagi)▷ Chinese Tea | Selected by the Chef▷ Almond Tea | Peach "Ikeda" (Yamagata)▷ Ma La Gao | Fig (Yamagata)◾️ Drinks▷ Beer | ROCOCO JPY 1,600▷ Sparkling | Yamagata Delaware Sparkling Dry / Asahimachi Wine JPY 1,200▷ White Wine | PINO COLLINA Gewürztraminer 2025 JPY 1,300▷ Chinese Tea | Shiki Chun JPY 1,000▷ Red Wine | KNEWITZ Spätburgunder 2022 JPY 2,000———————————————————————Thank you for reading my review. If you are interested in this restaurant, please bookmark it by clicking the "Save this restaurant" button at the bottom of the screen!♪———————————————————————
