It has been several years since my last visit to this charming old house restaurant. It has been about nine years since it opened, and before that, I frequently visited a place called Sancharin-sen.The garden has changed quite a bit since then, and it is no longer possible to stroll through it.This time, we reserved the reasonable Kaede Course (JPY 4,180) and a celebration plate (JPY 1,800) for three people to mark a special occasion. Although it was a public holiday lunch, the restaurant was less crowded than I expected. For the main meat dish, we could choose from pork tenderloin cutlet, pork sauté, or Tsubaki Hamburger Steak. The seat we were shown to had a nice view of the garden, but I noticed that instead of the usual flowers on the table, there was just a set of condiments and paper napkins, which is more common in casual dining. The meal began with scallops, salmon, shrimp, and fish escabeche. It was beautifully presented, and the quality of the ingredients was evident and delicious.Next came a cold pumpkin potage soup, which was rich and satisfying. Up to this point, we were enjoying our meal in a pleasant atmosphere. However, when the colorful salad was served, we were surprised when the main meat dishes and rice arrived just after we had taken a couple of bites. The table was a bit cramped, making it difficult to find space for everything. We were puzzled as to why the main dishes didn’t come after we finished the salad. It felt like the timing was off. Additionally, the young male staff served the dishes from the front rather than from behind the seats, which was a bit odd.Two of us ordered the hamburger steak, while one chose the pork sauté. Due to the limited space on the table, we had to hold the salad plate in our hands and eat quickly. The main hamburger steak, which had cooled slightly, was visually appealing and tasted good, but nothing extraordinary. After that, we received dessert, drinks, and the celebration plate. At that time, there were no serving plates provided, and there was no offer to take a photo of the celebration plate. While I don’t think it was solely due to the reasonable course, it left us with some questions about our celebratory lunch. As it is a well-regarded establishment, all three of us had high expectations. It wasn’t a complaint per se, but I wondered if a little more consideration could have allowed us to enjoy our time more leisurely.
